Thudbuster long or short travel?
 

I am setting up our Burley tandem for my 14 year old daughter. We will be doing centuries this spring. She has a cheap suspension seatpost that she is not happy with I was interested in the thudbuster, but was wondering whether you that have one use the long or short travel. She weighs about 130#. Any other suggestions for seatposts??

My stoker has and really likes the ST. Seems to be enough for the road. Depending on your daughter's seat post extension, you may not even have room for an LT.

Plenty of room required for the LT.

Mrs Grouch says the short travel version is plenty adequate for road bike use. That's good enough for me.

we have the lt version on our tandem. my wife loves the thudbuster. we replaced a cheap suspension post with it. you need almost 6" between top tube and seat rails to use the lt.

As the stoker, I can vouch wholeheartedly for the ST Thudbuster which my husband installed for me this past summer. Roads in Michigan are often in rough shape and the captain forgets to communicate upcoming bumps. With my Thudbuster, he doesn't hear any more gripes or yelps from me.

Make sure you use the correct elastomer. A fair number of stokers have pretty bouncy suspension seat posts, but I like a stiffer ride that still absorbs shocks.

Keep in mind if you can install the LT and ST equally, you should know and consider that they have different adjustment weight 'ranges' in addition to travel. The LT can be 'tuned' in smaller increments 100-120 lbs,(with optional white elastomer),120-140, 140-165 and so on. The ST is 100-140, 140-190, and so forth. The LT also has a preload adjustment that the ST doesn't.
Also, imo, the ST is easier to change the elastomers, jic you need to do that.
The LT tends, after a lot of riding, especially if the rider is heavy(which probably isn't your case), to get a little wobbly. But Cane Creek with fix that for you usually under warranty, so keep your box and reciept for shipping back to them. (btw, I've owned both, the LT on a hardtail mtn bike, and currently a ST on our tandem.)
If you buy a used older model, some don't have the adjustment knob, (#8), which makes installation SO much easier, so keep that in mind.
You'll also most likely have to buy a shim, unless you have the 2 sizes of seat tube on your tandem that CC matches.
If you ever plan on using a seatpost mounted rack, the ST will have more post....
