Roller riding a tandem

We do trainer workouts down at our team shop on Saturday evenings. Most of the guys ride the roller setup and do some 1k races. My daughter/stoker would like to do the races also so I'm trying to figure out how to rig something up. It has to be safe. I currently don't ride rollers as I'm nursing a broken collar-bone.

My thought is to simply install the trainer on the front wheel to hold the bike and put the rear wheel on the rollers. This would get us hooked into the speedo for the rollers and allow us to race. Question is, would the trainer up front be stable enough to hold everything fairly steady?

Here's a pic of our roller setup. We have 4 rollers, each a different color. There are 4 colored needles on the 500m dial. He bought this setup used in 1971.

All kinds of team workouts can be done with this setup. A fun one is to pick a common speed, say 20 mph. Then sink the needles up. One rider then sprints ahead half a lap until his needle is opposite the rest, then he holds that leed by riding at the common speed. As soon as he gets a half a lap up, the next guy goes, and so forth. Then when all the needles are sinked up, start agian.

There are many others.

Shayne,

My wife and I ride rollers on our tandem on our wooden floored porch. I build a plywood box about 14 inches high and attached a quick release (the kind used to secure front forks to the beds of pickups - Nashbar) to the top of it and screwed the box to the floor. Tandem front fork in QR, rear wheel on rollers, and away we go. The front roller ends up under the captains crank and there is plenty of clearance. Simply 'aim' the rollers to get the rear wheel to center on the rollers. Works great.

All the best

Thanks, I have an extra fork mount, now I'll just build up a box.
