Cleaned off the rust from the handle bars, seatposts, cranks, fenders and chainrings. Built a new wheelset: front is a Sun Rhynolite rim on a Sturmey Archer XFD drum brake with 14 gauge SS spokes. Rear is a Rhynolite rim on a Shimano Inter 8 premium hub with Nexave roller brake. I bought new cheap rubber block 1/2" pedals, balloon whitewalls, SRAM PC1 nickel chains, a rear rack for wicker panniers and the piece(s) de resistance: two Brooks B73s.

Maybe I don't want to know how much it weighs. I rode it with a friend in a Philly alleycat race in March. One of the checkpoints was at the LBS and we were awarded points for pounds. The Topeak workstand with digital scale built in kept displaying "ERROR". I read online that the max weight for the scale is 55 lbs.
Very interesting. This almost parallels what I did with my 1964 Schwinn Twinn, right down to the choice of wheel rims. The only real difference is that I used a Shimano front hub with a roller brake rather than the Sturmey Archer. The photo stream of the makeover is here.

I posted a thread in the C&V forum during the project.

All I know about the weight is that the bare stripped down frame, minus the fork weighed 15 lb, and fully assembled, my 60 lb capacity hanging scale wouldn't weigh it.

Co-Motion supremo, rear disc, 4 bottle cages, cyclometer, speedplays, 32.2lbs. Some ti fasteners that do not rust. Carbon bars, 12-27 dura-ace 10spd. May go for more ti fasteners and a pair of ti-speedplays and a fixed stoker stem.

So theoretically, the bike should now weigh 29lbs 2 ounces. We'll see what the scale actually says.
Okay, what did it say? Also, what do you reckon your frame weight is (sans fork, headset, eccentric)?

So you spend $$ and shave 10 pounds off your bike but you gained 20 over the past year??? Seems better to have a heavier bike and the riders lose weight would be cheaper and better health wise.

Or Spend $$ shave 10 lbs off your bike, ride lots, lose 10 lb, be 20 lb lighter overall... Not cheaper... but definitely happy... oh.... and fast!

I don't get the lose weight on bike v. on your body argument. Obviously you can do both.

Hey, I don't get the lose weight on body argument. I can't afford to lose 10 lb. Riding more has already cost me 5, and it's threatening to pull my BMI below 20. And BMI discriminates against tall folks, since it's weight (kg) over ( height * height ) (m^2), rather than divided by the cube of height.

Fully equipped with rear racks, bottle cages, pumps, tool kits and computers the Santana weighs 44 lbs and the Ventana weights 51 lbs. The saddle bag I usually take along with jackets, food, 1st aid kit etc. adds another 5 lbs. Then two filled bottles of water.......

So much for manufacturers' claimed weights!

Interestingly, the Paketa posted on the Craigslist ad thread thread is size small, and weighs 28 lbs. The extra weight in comparison to the Paketa demo appears to come from the Avid BB7, inclusion of pedals, and cages, as well as components that are high end, but not especially weight weenie (e.g. K-Sword bar/stem, Reynolds fork, etc).

This is a small, if you have $11,000 dollars I would recommend that you get one built for you, if not and you want the exceptional this may be for you.
This bike was little used and ready to ride.
The Captain top tube is 54 cm
The Stoker top tube is huge to give the stoker room and is adjusted by the stem of the Stoker handle bars, again this is a small.

There are a few things contributing to that weight. One is that it's an 05 model and the design has been greatly improved. The other thing is the pedals and bottle cages. The paketa demo was weighed without pedals or cages since there is such a range of pedal and cage weights. The american classic wheels that he has on the demo are also lighter than the rolfs. He's also using the lightest possible other components such as saddles, posts, bars, etc. It all adds up. The paketa demo is more like 24-25 lbs with speedplay pedals and carbon cages. Still crazy light.

Ca. early- to mid-80's Burley Duet. Suntour components, 48 spoke rear, arai drum brake, rack, comfort saddle and upright steel bars for the stoker cockpit. 50lbs.

It's and older bike that's seen lots of use. New to us 18 months ago. Team weight of about 360 lbs. Over the course of riding it about 2k mi or so, we've been through a couple spokes in each wheel, various cables, stuff you'd expect might need replacing every now and then.

Wear and tear seems to be aggravated on a tandem. I'm happy on our boat anchor.

However, my main (solo) commuter weighs in at 40lbs when loaded for a regular day, my lightweight commuter is 25 lbs, and my wife's commuter probably tops the scales at around 30 lbs. So the tandem always seems a bit sportier than my regular commuter, and weighs less than our two solo bikes combined.

We're not looking for a new or lighter weight tandem at this point--serves us well for commuting and recreational riding.

Pics from Calfee of the bike optimized for light weight. Neither pedals, nor bottle cages, and a conventional stem is used for the stoker. The suspect photographic quality makes it difficult to see that the scale reads 22.48 lbs.

It will not be that light again, as it is back in riding trim, with the addition of:
  • 4 carbon water bottle cages
  • Chris King headset replaces Cane Creek AER
  • Avid BB7 replaces ee brake rear caliper
  • Edge 66 carbon clinchers with disc hub replaces Wheelbuilder's lightweight wheels.
  • Calfee carbon adjustable stoker stem replaces aluminum 130 mm stem
  • Look Carbon Keo and Speedplay pedals
  • Specialized Ruby stoker's saddle replaces Toupe.

I'll update this post when I get a real-world weight.

We completed the Solvang [half] Century, then went by the Santana booth at the Expo, where Sanana's Bill McCready was compiling a data base of tandem weights and frame deflection.

Bill McCready getting the bike ready for the deflection test (weights in background).

25.15 lbs.

32 lb is really light, especially for the cost of that bike. I see you c'dale has a carbon fork instead of the monster that I usually see on them. Was that stock?

Saw this thread so I decided to weigh ours. Came in at 40 lbs. Not too bad for a '67 Gitane incl. pump, rear rack, and bag with a few tools. It did get aluminum cranks and rims in the late '70s to lighten it a bit.

Sold my '90 Burley Duet-weighed over 50# with 48 spoke wheels and drum. Now ride a "93 Santana Visa with new Dyad Velocity 40 spoke wheels and no drum...41#'s. The weight saving is significant, and the bike feels lighter! I think that this is more a function of stiffer butted tubes and much lighter wheels, than the overall weight. I think that it is the quality of the weight loss more than the sheer quantity that counts!!

So what does a stock '08 Santana Arriva SE really weigh? In that Tandems and Tandeming (why don't they just call it a Santana catalog with lots of old school marketing? They'd do better if it was re-written.) they say something about 34 something pounds as a comparison weight. What, exactly, does that mean?

I weighed it on my bathroom scale and if it is to be believed—it weighs 47 pounds—and I don't believe it. The bike is stock with a computer and four steel water bottle cages. 48 spoke Velocity Dyads for wheels. Does anybody know? I've surfed this thread and only one Arriva stated weight. I would think there'd be lots.

I would assume a comparison weight is the smallest size frame, with no pedals, cages, computer or rack. And lightweight tires.

Still, that's quite a discrepancy.

Hi, Just a note a 1972 Schwinn paramount tandem with racks and water bottle cages (3). Mixte rear and ready to ride at 39 lbs. Also a french frame tandem no name avail set up for 26x1 3/8 tires and touring with dual racks and all accessories at 45 lbs. It really depends on the use and condition of the bike and power avail. PS now retired and can't spend as much. Will enjoy these. I think that's what its all about anyway.

Well I finally went down an weighed our tandem. We have a 2007 Cannondale Road tandem. I have "added" a rear rack, four bottle holders and double wrapped the handle bars for comfort and the bike weighs out at about 40 lbs. I was surprised.

Thankfully we ride for the exercise and the bike appears to be making that even more possible. You gotta love it!
