We'll get trounced on sunset though because of the weight of this tandem. If we had a nice light one, I'm pretty sure we could break some hearts on that ride. We'd be nowhere near the front, but we would surely be able to put some uncomfortable pressure on a good number of folks. =)
If a tandem team can't match the group's acceleration, then even a strong team may get dropped. Once dropped, closing the gap is difficult as now the tandem is fighting the significant air resistance on their own own to catch the group, which may be at 25mph with a rotating pull.
So a tandem built for a fast group ride will be light, and have closely spaced gears, so as to have the best acceleration possible.

Happy - yes! It might not show on my face, but my bride/stoker sure looks great!!
It's not often that we get a good photo of us on the tandem, so I thought I'd share. We have made the move to ride mostly off-road these days. I highly reccomend it too!

Colotandem, that is a great shot.
Looks like you are using a lefthand sided timing chain. Guess you still have a triple in the back? Any details on what type of timing rings you are using and how they are attached to the cranks/triple chainrings? Thanks a lot.

It's actually a triple chainring but works out to be 2x10 drivetrain with the outer rings being the timing chain. 32t timing rings.

You guys are going to get me in trouble. Now I am daydreaming about adding a full suspension tandem to the stable. She would disapprove, not only of another tandem, but of me considering taking her offroad. She is hesitant, but then again she was hesitant about tandeming, now loves it. Hesitant about getting a road bike...done. What's next?!

Here we are at the top of Kaiser Pass on the Climb to Kaiser last month. Note the burial place of sled dogs, Whiskey, Babe and Trim.

Due to the wife's health the tandem has been sitting idle these past few years. But now things are much better and we did 32 miles on the Trail of the Coeur D Alene's in Idaho. Had the Burley since 1996 and next spring we may buy a new Co-Motion Mocha.

Mark and Banu total newbies!
My wife Banu has never been on a bike before, but overnight she's become an excellent Stoker! She has no bad habits to un-learn! She trusts me and the bike and keeps her center of gravity right over the bike at all times, and seems to read my mind with the pedals!
Our bike is a low-end heavy beach cruiser, but its all tuned up and runs so smooth! We're having a blast with it!
We are still fiddling with the seating though. After about 1 hour we are kinda sore.
