Some might scoff at the need for a light tandem on a relatively flat ride such as the Raincross. Weight only matters while climbing, it is said. Weight is mass, however, and mass is inertia. A tandem will already have greater mass than a half-bike, and problems matching the acceleration of a group of fast singles. A heavy (>40 lb.) bike will compound this problem.

If a tandem team can't match the group's acceleration, then even a strong team may get dropped. Once dropped, closing the gap is difficult as now the tandem is fighting the significant air resistance on their own own to catch the group, which may be at 25mph with a rotating pull.

So a tandem built for a fast group ride will be light, and have closely spaced gears, so as to have the best acceleration possible.

Happy - yes! It might not show on my face, but my bride/stoker sure looks great!!

It's not often that we get a good photo of us on the tandem, so I thought I'd share. We have made the move to ride mostly off-road these days. I highly reccomend it too!

^That picture if F*****G awesome! sums up tandeming so much for me. The look on the captains face might often be that of agony, but it sure is fun!

Colotandem, that is a great shot.

Looks like you are using a lefthand sided timing chain. Guess you still have a triple in the back? Any details on what type of timing rings you are using and how they are attached to the cranks/triple chainrings? Thanks a lot.

Thanks! LOVE this bike! It is our favorite tandem!

It's actually a triple chainring but works out to be 2x10 drivetrain with the outer rings being the timing chain. 32t timing rings.

I have pics and as many details as you want - PM me if you'd like so I don't hijack the "pictures" thread

Coming through Santos Trailhead, Mile 100 of 175 of a mostly off-road race.

As Colotandem mentioned, the Fandango is one of our favorite bikes too.

You guys are going to get me in trouble. Now I am daydreaming about adding a full suspension tandem to the stable. She would disapprove, not only of another tandem, but of me considering taking her offroad. She is hesitant, but then again she was hesitant about tandeming, now loves it. Hesitant about getting a road bike...done. What's next?!

Go for it! MTB tandems rock! Maybe try a demo tandem? My advice is to take it on some easy trails or dirt roads to start and just see how your stoker likes it.

Talk her into it...Or at a minimum try and borrow a bike to try off-road...Road tandem riding is fun...Off-road is fun too if you like it, just a lot different in a lot of ways.

Ready to descend from Sunrise, 6400' on the flank of Mt. Rainier, July 10. Highest paved road in the state of Washington, The Mountain in background. Yes, we had a lot of snow this past winter. Yes, we rode up in shorts and jerseys, now we're wearing everything we brought.

We'd stopped for a restroom break and I was taking a photo of my bride. A girl walked by and asked if we'd like her to take a photo of the two of us together.

Here we are at the top of Kaiser Pass on the Climb to Kaiser last month. Note the burial place of sled dogs, Whiskey, Babe and Trim.

(Thanks to Ritterview for helping me put this picture up on the forum...he's very good at that stuff).

Climb to Kaiser on a tandem is quite an accomplishment! Congrats. Those not familiar with the Climb to Kaiser should check out the ride profile on Strava (which I did on my half-bike).

Due to the wife's health the tandem has been sitting idle these past few years. But now things are much better and we did 32 miles on the Trail of the Coeur D Alene's in Idaho. Had the Burley since 1996 and next spring we may buy a new Co-Motion Mocha.

Mark and Banu total newbies!

My wife Banu has never been on a bike before, but overnight she's become an excellent Stoker! She has no bad habits to un-learn! She trusts me and the bike and keeps her center of gravity right over the bike at all times, and seems to read my mind with the pedals!

Our bike is a low-end heavy beach cruiser, but its all tuned up and runs so smooth! We're having a blast with it!

We are still fiddling with the seating though. After about 1 hour we are kinda sore.
