Hey we finally have a picture for this thread! We did a small organized ride the day after our wedding reception. This is us riding back to our hotel on our trusty Rodriguez

At the Tucson swap a few years ago, I bought a box full of cycling shorts from Rudy. I think that was the last time I saw him.

At a recent GABA bike swap they had a display with their riding jackets and other memorabilia. A person stated that they both had passed. I know that Kay had stopped riding by 2019. I'd love to be wrong and that the person gave me incorrect info and they're still around, but my current Tucson contacts aren't returning my messages at the moment.

Saturday's Filthy 50 was amazing. We had beautiful clear skies and the autumn colors were on full display!
The temps were cool, starting around 45°F ... and stayed chilly most of the ride warming up to the mid 50s. The big challenge was the wind ... 10-15 mph winds outta the west all day, with gusts getting to 20-25 mph. Somehow there was never a nice tailwind, just lots of crosswinds and some brutal headswinds to keep it spicy!
The other change was the soft gravel, there was very little hero gravel to be found. And the limestone dust was so fine and covered everything. After the ride, I looked like Pigpen taking off my socks.
One of my favorite parts of the day is that it's a gravel family reunion. We saw so many friends at the start, on the route, and at the finish party.
Stats: we finished the 50-mile & 4,200 ft course in 4:47, that's 6 minutes faster than last year (I was hoping with all our experience on the tandem, we'd have been much faster). With a bigger field of tandems this year, we were 4th of 7 tandem teams. Overall we finished 416th place, moving up 42 places overall from last year & a larger field finished... 588 finishers this year and 541 last year. So based on the rankings, everyone was slowed by the conditions, and I don't feel bad about being just a little faster this year.
The bike is our 2021 Co Motion Java - our30th anniversary gift to each other.
Trenton and team put on another amazing The Filthy 50 ... THANK YOU!

I did confirm with Greg Yares this week that Rudy and Kay have both passed away recently after living very full lives.
As stated earlier, they will be missed.

Here's one of the family in 2011 from the Loop 303 freeway opening with our Santana and the trailercycle. The kid's taller than me now, and the trailercycle's been sold to another user, but we still have the Santana.

My wife and I started riding our Cannondale 29er Mountain Tandem 5 years ago. Last summer, we "raced" to the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado (Cycle to the Summit). The mountain-bike gearing is great for climbs like that, and we did put slicks on the wheels, but that's still a pretty big bike to haul up a big mountain! So, we bought a Cannondale T2 last fall. With luck, we'll ride Pikes a little faster--and we hope to also ride Mount Evans (soon to be renamed Mount Blue Sky). We love riding our tandem year-round on dirt, gravel, pavement, snow, ice, whatever! Here we are on the top of Pike's Peak:

Its been a years long journey to create our motor-assisted custom steel-frame tandem with handicap-adaptive features.
The huge smile on my wife's face as we tour roadless river gorge rail trails and local rail trails is priceless.

Giddyup, I'm ready! When are you going to finish building the front half of the bike?

Success.
Framebuilder Jay Borden of Roulez Cycle, Lynn MA made this journey possible.
Eleven other builders said it could not be done or was too hard, before we found him.
We recommend him for your framebuilding needs.

Went back to Haleakala last week to see if we could still make it up the mountain 5 years later (both now age 72), Made it to the top and back down. We were lucky with the weather. Cloudy and cool on the way up, but sunny at the top and on the way down. Picture from this same spot 5 years ago was a better picture if you want look back to May of 2018 on this thread.

On June 24th Stuart Farrimond and I completed Chase the Sun a ride of 213 miles for us. It's starts on the east coast of England at dawn and finnishes on the west. The idea is to Finnish before the sun sets, we raised over £3700 for the brain tumor research charity.
