Convert 27" to 700c wheels
I have a early 80s Santana Soverign that I am looking to upgrade/modernize. My biggest question is can I switch to 700c wheels? It has canti mounts. Short of buying the new brakes, is there a way to tell, i.e. measure from the axle to the mount or something else.
If you have general suggestions on what to upgrade, it would be appreciated. Basically, everything is stock except saddles (brooks) and hubs (phil). The bike would receive limited use (1,000 or less a year), be used for touring and day rides.

i just took an actual measurement of a 700c wheel with 25mm tire. it measured 28" in diameter.
i hope this info helps compared to your 27" wheels.

The easiest way to check is to borrow a 700c front wheel, put it on your tandem, and then see if you can get your brake blocks to line up with the 700c front rim's brake track. It's about a 4mm difference, so not all brakes have enough adjustability to make it work. If it will work on the front & you have the same rear brakes, then it should also work on the rear.

and if it doesn't work? different cantilever or v brakes that have more/different adjustability might help.

I just grabbed a 27" wheel out of the garage and swapped it with my 700c tandem wheel and would say that i could probably ride the wheel just fine without even adjusting the brakes. Frankly i was surprised they were so close. Since the first wheel i stuck in didn't have a tire on it, i thought maybe it was actually a 700c even tho i knew it wasn't, so i went back and grabbed one out of my fixie with a conti 27x1 1/4 tire on it and it was the same. being picky, i'd probably adjust the brake pads a bit, but not much and there's adjustment to spare.
