Chain recommendations
Looking for chains for the new build and thought I'd ask what folks were using, liked and disliked.

Our C'dale is a 9 speed set up. I 've been running Shimano XTR9 speed chain part #CN 7701 on both the timing and drive sides for the last 1500+ miles. So far so good. I like'em because they are light, have a clean look and I just carry a spare pin for emergency repair instead of a spare link..not a big deal..just different. The chains are a little costly but I kept and eye on ebay for the right opportunity to buy them. We are a 305 pound team and lean on our chains more than a little here in the mountains. I 'm a bit of a detail freak so I do maintainance cleaning on them religiously. I'm a happy camper at this point.

Me, I just look for 'good' 9 speed chains on sale and stock up. 3 single chains usually = 2 timing chains and they don't wear out nearly as fast as the drive chain does.

I used the KMC/Nashbar tandem/recumbent chain for the timing chain. It is like $17 at Nashbar, and is long enough for any size timing rings.
I am running a 9-spd cassette. So, I just use the XTR/DA 9-spd chain for the drive chain. They are usually on sale somewhere. |
I'm sorry, I forgot to mention, I'm running 10spd Campy.
Thanks KRhea |
The keyboard is mightier than the chain tool. In one sentence, you made all the above responses moot.
It does seem that prior to 10 speed, a chain was a chain. Ever since 10 speed arrived, it seems to me there have been more questions about which chain than ever before. |
I use a Record 10 ultra narrow chain [timing and drive]. Although I have not had any issues, I only have about 1000 miles on them. I used a quick link [Superlink 4 I think] and that has not been a problem either. We ride in the Seattle area and mostly on level paths. We do live on steep hill [James in Kent, WA] so there is some load on it. We have a SRAM 11-28 cassette because of the Shimano freehub. All other drive components are Campy Record.
