tyres for tandem
 

hi all any ideas for some winter tyres for my tandem
i am using panaracer pasela tyres at the moment

they are worn out good road tyres but i fancy continental top touring for the width also they seem a more robust tyre

i use 26 inch mountain bike wheels 48 spoke with sun rhyno rims
also hydraulic brakes which are great :)

Steve, my winter snow and ice riding is limited so I can't help you much with a good winter tire.

We recently replaced our IRCs (I think they were 33s), with some specialized Armadillos (28s). When mounted on the bike, they looked wider, but the bike rolled a heck of a lot better. I bought a second set that I've put away for when these wear out.

We weren't supposed to experience too many flats with them, but we have had one. We woke up one morning during a ride across North Dakota and discovered a flat rear tire. I patched it, there was no evidence of what might have caused the hole. Probably glass. We were near a town, and there was a lot of glass in some areas. Haven't had a problem since.

What size are your Panaracers?

I have Armadillo 28s on the Peugeot and previous-generation "Armadillo technology" 28s on the Capo, and both sets are serving me very well for general transportation and commuting. Although they do not accelerate as crisply as the Conti Ultra-2000 23s on the Bianchi, I have not noticed any significant difference in rolling resistance.

Armadillos are reputed to be some of the toughest tyres out there, and I would definitely consider them, in a 28-35mm width, for use on a tandem.

Our tandem doesn't accelerate very quickly regardless of tires we have. ;) :D I wouldn't put them on any of my singles unless I was doing an epic tour. But we do like them on our tandem. Compared to our IRCs, we difinitly felt a difference. It was a smoother, faster ride.

i have taken advice and schwhalbe ?? tyres have been
ordered dont what...specific tyres yet i beleive they are 1.75 in width.....i am waiting for the wheelbuilder chap to send them out..
i will report how they handle once they are fitted and a suitable
distance has been covered.... :D

just need some decent weather !!!!!!!

one of our party came off his bike whilst desending down a hill
it was pretty slippy as branches of trees had fallen off
and the road was covered in what looked like sawdust ????

You're not alone. I put Armidillos 28's on my single bike lasts summer just to find out they scrapped the top of the fork. Other brands of 28's fit fine. So now the Armidillos are on the tandem.

We own a Calfee Tetra Tetra with the lightest carbon steerer/fork option. Unfortunately this setup limits our choice of tires to 700x26mm and under.
After the disappointing news at "build" time that our original choice Rivendell Rol-y Pol-y 700x 27's were too large we settled on running Continental Gatorskin Ultra's (700x25). We were quite pleased with those until winter, when the crud washed onto the road shoulders began to wreak havoc on them, kevlar sidewalls and all. We're now running Specialized Turbo Armadillos (700x26) which are slower and heavier, but look pretty darn tough.
We may try out some Panaracer Pasela TG's when the roads clean up later this year.

nova scotia tour .....on our tandem we have 26 inch tyres

decided to go for scwalbe tyres 1.9 as more durable
and plenty wide should give us better comfort on our great scottish roads:rolleyes:

We had Panaracer Paselas and found them very fast and comfortable until we had a front flat. The sidewalls are thin and very flexible and when they flat it is like riding on wet ice until you stop. Almost impossible to control even for a brief moment while braking to a stop. Have switched to Vittoria Hypers (700x35s) and LOVE them. Maybe a little slower than the Panaracers, but excellent handling and much more confidence inspiring. Marathons are nice too from what I hear but I have not yet tried them, based on my experience with the Vittorias, I may never switch now!

Since my last post in 2002 I've run nothing but Armadillos on our Calfee without a single failure. They typically last us a couple of years.

We've been using Maxxis Re-Fuse 700x25s on our Zona c/f twicer.
Puncture resistand and Kevlar bead + Kevlar belting.
Very easy to mount/remove tires; have actually done so without tire tools.
Good wear, around 2,000 miles on rear.
Living in the Arizona desert there are thorns, goatheads and other detritus on the road.

An old thread, but always pertinent . . .

Winter tires in the PNW mean very good in wet and resistant to road debris, which we have a lot of in the winter. We don't ride on ice, so that's not an issue for us.

I have a winter do_not_ride list that consists of tires on which friends, excellent bike handlers all, have gone down on in the wet, when we didn't even notice it was slick. So far:

Marathon Plus
Gatorskins
Vredestein Fortezza and Tricomp

I also have a recommended list of tires which we've tried and liked:

Conti 4000 Black Chili 25c - Very good in wet, fast, cut a little easily, but don't flat too often and are safe.
Schwalbe Durano 25c - Good in wet, more durable than the 4000s, but are a little slower.
Michelin Pro3Race 25c - Good in wet, slightly fragile sidewalls, fast, don't flat too much.

Still testing Zona's recommended ReFuse. New front flatted in 15 miles, but it was glass, so we'll give it a by. Don't know about traction, cutting, etc., yet.

Continetal GP 4000's 700x25c's (23 on the TT wheels)

They have a kevlar belt and fold like kevlar tires but are really steel beads. You can get them at walmart kmart target and others for around $16. I'm testing the crusier tread pattern now. These tires are as good as the trek invert 2k which is no longer made.

We are fair weather riders. I weigh 235 and my stoker weighs 115. If I know we will be on good roads only, I use the Panaracer Pasela 700 x 28. But I feel much more confident and comfortable on Panaracer Pasela Tour Guard 700 x 32 as most of the suburban roads we ride are not that smooth and many of our bike paths are crushed limestone.

If you can source some the Continental Top Touring 2000 tires were the best, if you get the German handmade gumwalls. They can still be found but are scarce. Expect to pay if someone on eBay knows what they have.

The modern Contis are almost as good, emphasis on almost.
