bar end buzzer/horn

A few years ago I rode TOSRV with a couple that had a bar-end buzzer or horn. Took batteries and was very loud. Asked him recently what brand it was and he could not find a name on the unit or remember from where they got it. They have it on their tandem. Any thought on where or if it is still produced. Would be great for the local bike path for those runners/walder wearing headphones.

Thanks,
Dave

Do you really want to be the guy who uses some excessively loud device to scare the little kiddies out of your way on the bike path?

Not the little kiddies that I am targeting. More like the adult that decides that it is okay to walk/run 3-4 abreast and forces all others to the grass. So in that regard...yes.

I'm interested. When you commute, you need an audible signaling device loud enough to be heard inside a car with its windows up and the air conditioner on, and a driver not paying attention to the fact that s/he's running a stop sign while talking on a cell phone. The more like a car horn such a device is, the better.

I vaguely recall seeing such a device years ago. If anybody has any info on its availability nowadays, I'm definitely interested.

The Airzound works great. Refillable with your standard pump on schraeder valve. I used one for a while but the thing was so offensivly loud I let it go when I sold the tandem it was attached to. It claims to have a volume control but, no matter where you had the thing set, you could kill an old person at fifty feet.

actually i like just spooking the cat w/ it. (i'm joking!) when your outside in traffic i don't think it's so incredably loud.

My buddy's got an AirZound, and it's about as loud as a car horn. Nothing "offensive" about that; they make car horns that loud for a reason.

Only question left for me is, do I get one via the 'net right away, or wait for a "Super Sale" at the LBS?

I guess I should clarify why I wrote "offensively loud". Yes they are as loud as a car horn. When the situation calls for that type horn, you cant beat the airzound. If you find/put yourself in that type situation pretty often and need a loud horn to make yourself known, airzound is your animal. If you are into tours and rallies and just need a "ping" to let folks know you are around then, yes, they are offensively loud in that situation. I didnt mean I didnt like the product, just meant I dont need that much Db. Also, I had one of the first production runs so, maybe they work a little different now.

Couple of years ago, my wife and I were riding our single on a bicycle path along a road. A women that was coming in front of us was watching houses along the road. But she was not looking in our direction. Eventually she start drifting on our side crossing the middle lane and coming into our way. I first rang my bell, but she did not here it. Still looking at the side of the road but not in front of her. Then I screamed at her but still, she did not understand me and she was close to me. I just had time to avoid her but my wife did not. They hit each other and my wife end up with a broken hip bone and a minced meat forearm. Because of that, she end up off the bike for more than a month and lost an opportunity for a job. We still have a ring bell install on our bike for polite indication of our presence but just aside from the bell there is an airzound sitting. It may sound like a train horn but there is nothing like this to let people know that your are there. Because this thing is so loud, people are usually affraid that something big, very big is coming at them and they rapidely start looking around and they see you. This thing is also very good to affraid chasing dogs or to clear a bicycle path full of kid on roaller skates and walkmans of their heads.

Be carefull and have a nice day,
Michel (onroule)
