Tandem Tire Question
I just scored a mountain bike tandem from a friend (an old, purple Specialized "Deja Two"), my first tandem. I'm not sure who I'm going to ride this thing with, but I think it will be a lot of fun.
I don't intend to ride this thing in the dirt. At the moment, its fitted with some nice cross-tires. But can I put lightweight, narrow tires on it? I'm thinking of a pair of Specialized Fat Boys, which are 1.25 slicks. Will they let the bike shed some weight and make it more zippy on the road, or are they an invitation to an accident?

They'll do just fine so long as you're mindful of your tire pressure needs, i.e., make sure you get sufficient air in the tire to preclude snake-bite flats. This is usually at or slightly above what is specified as the max psi for a given tire such that you end up with just a slight bulged in the sidewall when both your and your stoker are on the bike and riding.

Thanks - I hadn't thought of that. OK, I'm making the switch!
