Suggest new disc wheelset
Hi,
I have a 2720 gram no name hub wheelset with Alex DM-21 rims which are pretty wide, 40 hole disc hubs. The spec....
Hubs Front: Alloy Sealed bearing Disc 40h, Rear: Alloy Sealed bearing Disc cassette
Rims Alex DM-21, 40-hole
Spoke Brand Stainless steel, 14ga. (2.0mm) straight gauge
The team can be 320 to 400lbs. We ride some in between regular road and mtn.
Firstly, is 2720 a heavy wheelset?
Secondly, can you suggest a build with good to very good components, or even a factory built set? I can go either way.
I can't find the weight of the DM-21s, but they've been strong.
We don't ride a lot of miles, but about 3 times a month.
Perhaps a Velocity Dyad? Is 36 hole out of the question or stay with 40. Also, could I use alloy nipples instead of brass?
Thanks for your suggestions and guidance.
SBob

You going to hear a lot of opinions. 600-700$ or so for a real nice set. Brass nipples, swaged spokes, Dyad's are a good choice for a wider tire.

My wheels set is 1770 grams but we weigh 250 lbs.
I would go with White Industries hubs, DB 14/15 spokes, brass nipples (alloy = worthless junk).
For rims you could use Dyad for wider tires or Deep V for more aero which only matters a tiny bit at higher speeds but the deep profile also makes it very strong.
Not sure about 36 or 40 spokes but the Deep V would be more likely to be strong enough with 36 spokes.
Yes it will cost $600 to $700 and will be worth every $.
I would recommend talking with a custom wheel builder like these::

There are plenty more if those don't work out.

Thanks. Why White Industries? quality, value? I've had alloy nipples on my disc mtn wheels, why not on a tandem, especially if it'll be 40 spoke?
I like the Dyads b/c of its width and the Deep V a little less. I figured on the wheelbuilders site that I could get to about 2100g with a 40 spoke, disc, and brass nips. I guess 600 grams of rotating weight would be a real good thing.......
Thanks.

WI, CK, made in the US, good customer service. Some have had trouble with Hugi's. Hard facing not up to par on the drive mechanism, stripping of the teeth that lock drive together. 1st hand experience here. Our new WI set-up is nice.

WI are a good value. Very high quality, reasonable weight and cost. There are not a lot of options for tandem hubs.
CK (Chris King) are also good but make a loud buzzing when coasting which some people like and others hate.
Aluminum nipples save a negligible amount of weight especially on a tandem and eventually corrode and freeze to the spoke.
This makes truing the wheel at a later time impossible as aluminum is a softer material and the nipples just round off.
Aluminum nipples are also more likely to break. IMHO it just isn't worth saving a few grams.
