Restore, or Modernize, or make it "Lame"

So I've floundered for over a year trying to decide how to rebuild this 70's vintage Mel Pinto tandem. It's been in the (extended) family its whole life and some of its sentimental value comes from having discussed a few repair options directly with the late, great Sheldon Brown.

I have powdercoated it this extremely bright yellow (formerly a dull burnt orange) and have most parts meticulously cleaned and restored (except for a few appropriate upgrades). I've even arranged to replicate the original decals. But I know it would never be appreciated fully by anybody in my family and I'm tempted to replace the 3x8 speed gearing (including a pretty low granny) with an 8 speed shimano internal geared rear hub. Riders in this family would greatly appreciate the shifting convenience (like shifting from a stopped position) because they'd already be a little freaked out riding a tandem. But I'm not sure I want to insult this thing with such a lame setup. Anybody care?

If you just want to restore it to concours-like quality (e.g. replicating decals...) you may want to keep the same set-up.

If you expect it to see heavy use and want the convenience, then by all means modernize it even though it might seem lame. You can alway switch it back.

Not too many Mel Pinto tandems out there.
Nice one with double twin lateral male/ladyback!
If it will be used, set up as you wish even if its an internal 8 speed.

IMHO...while there is certainly a place for the rare 'one-off' museum piece.....I believe bikes should be ridden and enjoyed. Change whatever you think you must so that more members of your family can enjoy it. Make it pristine and efficient ...but mostly, make it rideable!
