Quick Release question
 

Wanted to get a QR set for our travels case drop out mounts. Was hoping to find Shimano XT's available from the local bike shop, but none of the catalogs had them listed. I need a set of 100mm / 145mm.

Saw some on eBay a while back and picked up a set. These were advertised as 145mm, but I'm thinking the seller is wrong and they are 140mm.

Does anyone have a means to get a description for this Shimano part number, 3-32P90400? Tried some searches but no luck. I'd just like to be certain before I decide what to do with them.

For your rear dropouts, you can get a fully threaded aluminium shaft (3/8-5/16" x 5") at a good hardware store. Screw on a set of nuts and put the threaded shaft into your rear dropouts. Back the nuts out until they are contacting the inside of your dropouts. Then screw a second set of nuts on the outside of your dropouts. Tighten a little until you cannot move them. For your front dropouts, go to your local LBS and ask for the plastic dropout braces that come with all new bikes. Total cost should not exceed $4.00

Had a similar problem a few years ago and like you wanted XT's due to the known quality for Tandems. I hit lucky first time out because I went to a store that understands Tandems. Might have to find a Tandem shop that will know where to find them.

Salsa makes a 145mm skewer, not sure how good they are.
I don't see XT skewers at any of the usual tandem parts suppliers.

In reply to the recommendation of using threaded rod. This is a great idea, and I do use it on one of my setups for transporting in the van. Being a rear dropout, I believe I used 3/8 rod, hex nuts inboard and wingnuts outboard.

Our travel case is a BikePro style soft / padded bag with the steel rail. I purchased an optional rear dropout holder that has adapters for the dropouts and uses a quick release to secure it.

I had purchased the ebay XT releases based on them being said to be for 145mm. If not, I'm not out a ton of money. Just trying to know for certain.

FWIW, our Co-Mo does have Salsa releases securing the wheels. I'm hoping to find XT's for the off road tandems. XT's have always worked well on my singles and I cant recall a wheel slipping with an XT. Styles like the Salsa use a plastic washer in crush. I have never used Salsa releases off road, but have had other similar styles slip and shift the wheel on technical singletrack. The Salsa's on the Co-Mo road tandem work very well.

I'll give a call to Shimano next week and see if they have the description of that PN.

This may be a stupid question but, have you actually measured the one you have to verify it's only 140?

That's just it, I have compared an oem 145mm XT that came on a bike with XT tandem hubs to this ebay QR. The ebay one is shorter so it likely is a 140mm.

Just seeing if someone had a means to get a description based off the PN.

I'm pretty much fine with it currently, just thought it may save someone else a $30 mistake if the seller is wrong.

I'd love to have dedicated QR's for the travel case, but the worse case is removing the Salsas and use them when we travel.
