Campy triple compatibility
 

Just got some new Campy Ultra Shift levers.
The installation instructions says to use with ultra shift front derailleur.
Campy does not make a triple ultra shift FD, just something called Comp triple.
Will the ultra shift levers work with the Comp triple derailleur?
How about Shimano triple FD?

I'm sure you'll get an answer here, but did you post also in the Bicycle Mechanics forum? Lots of action over there and some smart folk.

It will work with anything. It's not really indexed but has multiple positions. Right now I have a new Centaur US on my single with an old 8sp front derailleur and a 8sp triple and it works fine.

As rmac wrote, the Campy Ultra-Shift will work with just about any front derailleur, noting Campy's Ergo levers aren't specific to double or triple front derailleurs either. Campy's left-hand Ergo's close-ratio "Micrometrical’ indexing is truly a wonderful thing for tandems.

FWIW, the Ultra-Shift simply brought a decrease in lever travel to the left-hand Ergo shifter that controls the front derailleur movement such that it takes about 1/5 as much lever movement to move the front derailleur X distance as it did on the previous generation Ergo lever, i.e., similar shifts will take less hand movement on the Ultra-Shift.

Of course you have to sort through all the 'stuff' that gets posted by the less than well-informed who feel the need to answer questions about which they know very little to get to the ones that are helpful...

Also: I just checked the Campagnolo website and they don't list the Comp Triple rear derailleur anymore - Has it been discountinued?

I just got them but don't have the frame yet. I am used to Shimano so I think the thumb shifter will take getting used to. Not mounted on the bike it seems to take a lot of force to activate the thumb shifter.
I decided against Shimano this time because of the higher cost and weight and they are not repairable.

No, I'm a cheapskate and buy most of my stuff second hand... so I'm running '06 model-year Campy Record 10 Ergos

I've given up on trying to keep up with the changes. Lickton's and a few other places always seem to have a pretty deep supply of new and older stuff and will likely have NOS Comp Triples; what do ya know!?

Again, I tend to mix and match based on what I can find on sale. In fact, I'm one of the few folks running a very scarce clamp-on 2004 Campy Record Titanium Triple FD on our Calfee with a 2002 Campy Record 9/10 long cage rear derailleur.

I too use a Record Titanium triple FD and the last year of the long arm Record RD.
I just purchased a SR 11 set up for my new [for me] S-Works Tarmac. I like the newer shifters but not the way they look. I still like the looks of the older ones. I did install the 'red' springs in the older levers and never did use the levers with the original springs [on the Tandem].
As for older Campy stuff, there is a lot of the stuff floating around on the net. I have never had an issue with eBay but maybe because I have been lucky. If your not in a hurry it will show up some day for the price you are looking for.

I cannot answer the original question, but I do use the campy shifters. Just about 2 months ago, I finally switched from bar-ends to brifters on my single road bike. I went with campy centaurs. It works great. I love the campy setup. Being able to shift multiple speeds at a time and routing all the cables under the bar tape is fantastic. I originally wondered about the whole thumb button thing, but that is one of the best parts. It is incredibly easy to upshift while accellerating. So, I recently got a Cannondale road tandem that came with 9 speed Tiagra's. Wow, those did not compare. I can't speak to the comparison to ultegra, but I quickly found some Centaurs for really cheap and replaced them. Just like the road bike, the tandem now has 10 speed campy centaurs, with a 9 speed shimano hub, and it works flawlessly.

I got my Centaur shifters from Ribble for a great price, around $235 with shipping.
I did have to wait a few months before they got some in stock, but once they had them the shipping was quick.

FWIW, page 41 of the 2010 catalog shows the Comp group with crank, front and rear derailleur.
