Tandem Question
 

Could somebody please post some info about tandems that have the captain on the back and stoker up front in a semi recumbent position, used mainly for people with a disability.

Can you be a bit more specific?

There's a ton of information in the archives and the web on the various different models, e.g., Counterpoint Opus, Bilenky Viewpoint, Hase Spezialräder Pino (Pino-Hase), etc...

They are a great solution for adaptive or disabled riders, but they are also a popular choice for many owners who are not otherwise disabled.

I wasn't sure what they were called, so that's why I didn't do an archive search, (stupid or lazy?) ;)

I'm currently studying to work in the disabled sector and as I take a vision impaired guy riding I was wondering about introducing other people with differing disabilities to tandem riding in the future. :)

OK, another question.

My lecturer was impressed with the info so far and could see how we could use the Hasebike and the Bilenky, but he was wondering if there is a tandem bike with a recumbent front with 2 wheels and upright at the back. The steering would still have to be from the rear. He feels that some clients who might move around a bit would need the stability of 2 wheels. Possibly even have a safety restraint for the client.

If nothing exists, we have a number of frame builders here where I live and a college racing recumbent program who would be up for the challenge.

There are recumbent tandem trikes - Greenspeed in Oz and TerraTrike over here. But those are captain forward, and both riders are in the recumbent position.

Considering Bilenky's various other bikes, I'm sure he could design and build one. But the local approach might be more interesting...

The local college builds recumbents of high quality which win Energy Breakthrough Challenges on a regular basis. The teachers are engineers, who actually think outside of the square....not just "snobby" qualifications of a nice piece of paper.

Our local frame builders make high quality track and road bikes out of steel/Alu/carbon.

I'm sure they could achieve this task adequately and safely.
