Swap Meet tandems . . .
Participated in the annual GABA Bike Swap Meet in Tucson today.
Good crowd of about 3,000 shoppers and vendors/sellers stretched out for 3 city blocks plus even into some of the blocked off side streets.
Spotted about a dozen tandems for sale from a brand new cu$tom alu Gilmour to a couple old rusted Schwinn Twins @ $125. Also a couple Santanas, one at $1,100 and the nother at $2,000.
Three older Burleys in the $600+ range. A KHS Milano, a way-over priced Kent at $500, a Motiv @ $300 and an old Italian never-heard-of-it 70s-era brand for a ridiculous $1,100 . . . with a mishmash of components and paint stripped off with rust still showing.
Yes, there are used tandems out there . . .

Bought a steel track tandem frame from the builder at the Spring 2010 swap meet at the San Diego Velodrome for $350. My wife and I are virtually the same height and it is difficult to find tandems in our size, so we went for it, not knowing when we would get around to building it up. One year later I had succeeded in collecting all the parts and had our LBS build it up on a new wheelset: Mavic GP4 40 hole tubular rims laced to Phil Wood hubs. We're in it $3,600 now and have taken it out on the track twice for a total of 12 miles. We are still figuring out how to bring it to a stop gracefully. The second time we rode it we ended up in the weeds in the center of the warm-up circle.
At the spring 2004 swap meet we found a 1986 Fisher MTB tandem in our size for $350. We shredded the single track at Sea Otter on it two years running, then built new wheels, added touring racks and rode it from San Francisco to San Diego along the coast.
