Because............they are very uncomfortable on long rides...........and all our half bikes have Campy Record 10 speed which I am more comfortable with. Here is what I am thinking of doing: buy new 11 speed Record shifters for my best half bike and use a Jtek shiftmate to make it work with the 10 speed gearing there until I upgrade the rest of that drive train to 11 speed later. THEN, move the liberated 10 speed Record shifters to the Santana Team Al, add the appropriate Jtek shiftmate (Number 2 I believe) to make it shift the existing Shimano XT rear derailleur and 9 cog cluster.

The only hitch is that I am not sure if the left Record shifter, currently shifting a double chain ring on my half bike, will work on the triple front on the tandem or not. This Record group is from around 2004. Does anyone know if they were double/triple compatible back then? If not that plan will have to be scotched!

Half measures and Jteks, not that appealing.

Just go for it, and put Record 11-speed on your Santana Team Al.

Also, consider a (new) SRAM X.9 or X.0 10-spd RD with a 10 speed Shimano cassette - no Jtek required. This setup is shifting perfectly on several tandems hereabouts. For some reason SRAM cassettes don't shift well with this setup - go figure.

I've got 10sp Veloce shifters on a 9sp Shimano drivetrain and it works perfectly with Jtek.

Thanks for the responses...........rdtompki, am I correct in assuming that the scheme you outline here utilizes 10 speed Campy shifters? Old Record or Chorus 10 speed or new Centaur 10 speed?

Second question, as I would be changing over the shifters to Campy 10 speed from Ultegra 9 speed, will the existing 9 speed chainrings and Ultegra FD work with a new 10 speed chain running on/through them? The reason I ask I would like to avoid replacement of the cranks and chain rings because of the knock on impact on the timing chain and other crank set.

Our daVinci uses new Chorus (ergo) 10 speed shifters. Be advised that when I tried my arrangement with a 12-28 SRAM cassette I couldn't get the rear shifting to behave somewhat inexplicably. Just for grins I'm going to try and SRAM chain (now using KMC) and see if that chain will work on the SRAM cassette.

I can't answer the second part of your question since our daVinci chainrings are quite an unusual setup (quad 1/2-size chainrings made from hyperglide cogs (this due to the 2:1 step-up gearing in the ICS drive train).
