Update: Can bike be salvaged?

Thanks for all the advice. Went back to LBS and retrieved my tandem. Come to find out, I have Sansin hubs with a Sachs 7 speed freewheel, not Suntour. I bought a used freewheel on Ebay and found a person who will refurbish my current freewheel. Cogs have no wear and it is an internal "gunked" problem. Hopefully a cleaning will do the trick. No need to change to Shimano or worry about redishing wheel or new shifter or new derailleur. Hopefully the freewheel cleaning or newly purchased item will do the trick. Thanks again for all the responses.

I didn't follow whatever was in your original post, but I'll toss out an idea now, late though it may be. First, consider asking in the C&V forum. Second, check out www.freewheelspa.com. (I have no financial interest. Pastor Bob is just a nice guy who knows bikes, and is an active member in C&V! And I've ridden with him.)

Glad to hear that you took a different swing at it. Not surprised that it is a Sachs freewheel because they were used a lot at that time. Good, solid reliable stuff. Often when a tandem sits a while they do get a bit bulky in the shifting area...keep an eye on the cables as well because a little drag internally and the shifting will drive you nuts.
Hopefully you will get your C'dale all tuned up and enjoying the ride. ...(a PM is on the way)
