New tandem owner

Hello all. Just thought I'd post a hello here.
My wife and I just purchased a new Cannondale RT2 and are very excited at the thought of riding together. We both ride single bikes but find it difficult to actually ride together as I would rather ride fast and she would rather ride slow.
Yesterday was our maiden voyage. A nice little ride of 25 miles. We had a blast.

We bought our Speedster last summer for the same reason as you did. We love the tandem so much, that I think I have only used my single twice since buying the tandem and that was because my wife was busy and couldn't ride those days. Welcome to the forum.

I'm a tandem newbie myself. Just picked a used Trek T100 up on Friday. There is such a difference in our cycling ability right now. I'm doing some respectable mileage and she can get around the neighborhood a couple of times. Hopefully this is what will get my wife out from in front of the tv and out riding with me instead. She seems excited about it.

It's a great move, but heed the good advice hereabouts. Even though your wife can work at here own rate, she's still got to sit on the seat probably for longer than she's accustomed and there is a lot of trust involved. Build up gradually and plan stops that she will appreciate (e.g., Starbucks). Do whatever you can to make here comfortable on the bike. Happy tandeming.

Highly recommend doing some searching on this forum to get a good feel for how to ride with a new stoker. One consistant theme is to COMMUNICATE!

I would also suggest that you take her to a good LBS and get her some good ladies riding shorts, shoes and a nice jersey along with a helmet and gloves.

We are already discussing how to do that best and reading up on the subject. It will be a learning process for both of us. I have already learned the top 3 rules, however:
#1) Don't scare the stoker
#2) Don't scare the stoker
#3) Don't scare the stoker

Those will have to be mail ordered, unfortunately. The LBS won't have anything that fits her, nonetheless that she will like. She did try on a pair of my baggies and found them acceptable, at least to start with. She already has some good Shimano riding shoes and a helmet. She wants us to match. I said we can do that in time, once we know we will both stick with it.

My daughter is also excited about it. We were planning on doing some t-shirt rides together over the summer, so we will probably do them on the tandem now.

That's funny Spiff. My wife bought us new matching jerseys that match the color of the bike. I just laughed and thought she's such a girl. haha.
we have been out twice now, 25 and 26 miles and all is well. we are really enjoying it. We wanna gets some miles under our belt before we do any organized rides. I can finally get her talked into a metric now. Her previous longest ride on a single bike was 50 miles.
I have noticed it seems to be more of a workout for me on a tandem.
On singles she averages 12 mph and I average 16 -17 mph. Now we are averaging 14.5 on the two rides we have done. We seemed to have met about in the middle. That was the intention with the tandem. Also, every time I look back she's there.

"Happy wife, happy life" is never more true than when she is your stoker. Lots of good advice in these posts.

My hubby and I just got a Trek T900 today. I will be the pilot and he will be the stoker. Weird, we know, but he has Parkinson's Disease and is losing strength and mobility. We're hoping that the exercise will help with the coordination problems and increase his stamina. He does not mind sitting in the back, "I've always liked watching you from behind" is his statement.

Welcome to the list Princess! Don't worry about the gender flipflop we welcome all kinds here , Anyway we all get weird looks over here in the tandem section anyway! I believe there are few women captains here on the forum who can give you a better perspective of what to expect!

Good for you! And there's reason to believe that the Tandem will be helpful for his Parkinson's

As I understand it, there's a benefit to "forced exercise" so that you setting a higher cadence helps push him, hich helps with the disease.

IIRC, there was aposter on here doing academic research with Tandems, and I think it might have been in relation to Parkinson's

Yo Princess!
Female captains are every bit as good as males!
Have ridden many times with a 'Parkie' friend; she trained with me to ride the El Tour de Tucson and did exactly that . . .
She crossed the finish line whooping/hollering and throwing her arms up! Great!
Pedal on TWOgether!
