Can anyone help me put a date on this Dawes tandem?

Hi all. Can anyone help put a year on this Dawes Galaxy? The handlebars say "hand made in england" and I think the later Dawes were made outside the UK, so I'm guessing somewhere in the mid-90s?

Any ideas?

OP; Don't think I would bet the bank on the possibility that no one has swapped the bars out for something else that fit their fancy better in the 2-4 decades of its life? Also the frame may have been bought loose and built out by the LBS or an end user. However I found nothing in the photos that would distract one from grabbing it up with gusto. It is very clearly a very fine bike and well fitted out. If there is any weakness, it would be the freewheel rear hub, but until it brakes an axle, I would leave it alone while also picking up a modern cassette hub with the matching OLD and spoke count (PM if you have uncertainty with those).

If you can find a tribute site dedicated to the brand name, it should allow you to nail it down a bit closer as to age. Should be a serial number on the frame somewhere although most folks selling a tandem on ebay seem to have never thought to look for it (nor much knowledge in general of the item at hand).

I will add that the tandem tubing stickers and the lugged front ECC bottom bracket look correct for a Reynold tandem-grade 531 tube set with evidence from the recent post in this forum of a set for sale.

/K

I can't help you with this, but have you tried asking on the CTC forum or maybe YACF? Should be somebody who knows over there. Or maybe the tandem club UK?

It's a nice looking bike...

Based on 7 speed, bar end shifters, I'd guess late 80's early 90's.

Hmm...thanks all. Very useful. I guess the 7 speed block is a good clue (made by Sachs). I'll try one of the specialist forums mentioned.

If you are thinking of buying it, I wouldn't worry about the date; if it fits you and your stoker, I would go for it. It's a good-looking bike and Dawes make/made good bikes. Don't they still make tandems? We rented a new Dawes touring tandem in France last year. Could you ask them for the manfr date?

Thanks all. I tried the CTC forum too and they thought 1992. Interesting stuff.
Thanks again

Nice looking Dawes. I was going to guess a little earlier than 92 but that would be based on the components which may or may not be original.
