Teflon belts for tires
After riding the Badger State Trail and the Sugar River Trails in Wisconsin this spring which was awesome, we heard about the Cowboy Trail in Nebraska and are planning to ride it in September. Doing a little research about the trail we found the folks up there warn about the puncture vines and advise to use teflon belts to avoid flat tires. I have to admit after riding the Katy Trail for years and other rails to trails in several States, this is the first time I've of this hazard as well as teflon belts. When I googled teflon belts for tires, one of the websites that popped up was the Cowboy Trail. Needless to say it made a believer out of me. Could anyone shed some light on the teflon belts. I'd appreciate it.

Teflon? You sure it wasn't Kevlar, a.k.a. aramid? Several tires have these, for example the Panaracer Pasela TourGuard.

Agree with jimmiller:
Never heard of Teflon tires.
Kevlar/aramid tires: we use Maxxis Re-Fuse 700x25. One flat in 5,600 miles in 2011.
We live in Arizona, so lotsa cactus, debris and even a few goaheads.

Thanks for the responses. The website we found about the trail suggests using "burr proof tires or the Teflon belts to prevent flats. They are inexpensive and easy to install."

They are probably referring to a product like the Mr. Tuffy Bicycle Tire Liner. It's polyurethane, which could probably be mistaken for Teflon. It's a belt you put in your tire before inserting the tube. They do work, though they make your tires heavier and slower. Of course speed gets relative quickly if you have a lot of flats.
