Looking for a rear wheel for older tandem

I need a wheel for our 90s Burley Duet.
140 spacing, 7sp cassette.
I think I could maybe squeeze a 145 8 sp in there with a little effort. Does anybody have one or know of one?
Thanks!

I just re-spaced a 145 to 140 for our Cannondale that we picked-up this year. The 145 was a very difficult fit but it did go in. I wouldn't recommend that for an aluminum frame but don't know what material yours is. Steel would probably flex enough to fit but ours did not. My LBS re-spaced the 145 and all is working well. I'd think you could get new ones from Tandems East.

145 Shimano tandem hubs at Jensonusa. $215. You can always have one built if the 145 works. We have a 97 Burley Duet that uses the Shimano tandem hub.

The Duet is steel (Tange) so I'm guess it would spread, guessing the OP's is also steel.

This one says 145 then says 140 in the description, mistake I'm guessing.

48 hole $187 also 145

Peterwhite says he has 140 but a bit more expensive.

I have a brand new DT Swiss - Hugi 140mm, 36 hole hub sitting in my drawer. I could sell it for US$50 for the hub only plus $20 shipping = $70 (your local bike store should then be able to build it into a wheel for you), or US$180 fully built up with a Mavic A719 or DT Swiss TK 540 rim and DT Swiss Comp spokes plus $70 shipping = $250. Shipping should take 2-3 weeks. The cassette body will take any Shimano 7 to 10 speed cassette, I can include the extra spacer to use it with a 7-speed cassette for free. The hub looks exactly like the upper one in this image (no disc or drum brake mounting, rim brake only):

I have a 140 tandem rear wheel in very good condition taken from a '91 C'dale Tandem. Phil Hub, Sun Chinook Tandem Rim, 48 spoke. It has a Sack's 7 speed freewheel on it (12-28)...not a cassette as the sacks was the typical tandem setup of the early '90. PM if you are interested.

I think the above fits into the catagory of a taadah moment!! If not, look for closeouts on ebay. Not that unusual to find a shop selling a pair of new tandem wheels on the cheap (like $130 for the pair). I bought several pair of 48-spokers in 2010, was very impressed, so I put them on my commuter and hybrid bikes also after upgrading my older tandems which had aging 40-spokers on them.

The 145mm Shimano HF08 can be easily modified to 140mm, and is available in 40H and 48H.

https://www.amazon.com/Shimano-HF08-T...086662&sr=1-20
https://www.amazon.com/Shimano-Tandem...086662&sr=1-21

Or the whole wheel:
https://www.amazon.com/Handspun-Shima...5&keywords=40h
the wheel should be re-dished. I was incredibly lucky, and scored one of these on ebay for $100-

You can get a spacer for 7 speed instead of 8/9/10 speed.
https://www.amazon.com/Cassette-Space...rds=7+8+spacer

Another choice is to go with this hub and add a washer on each side:
https://www.amazon.com/Wheel-Master-A...9&keywords=40h
https://www.amazon.com/Wheel-Master-T...1&keywords=40h

Getting a 145mm will take a LOT of brute strength; with 140mm around, not worth it.

I build my own wheels, which provides more choices.

I have a 140 mm wheel with a 7sp freewheel mounted that you can have for the cost of shipping (from Ohio). Someone gave me this wheel years ago because I had a motobecane tandem, but I never had a use for it. It has an araya drum break mounted.

If BWFOX is not a taker, I certainly will as I always have an old Motobecane tandem needing fixing. Let me know shipping to 62269. PayPal is good way to do it.

I'll give bwfox first refusal, but otherwise your welcome to it. I do have a paypal account but have never used it to get paid for something. How does that work?
