KMC X10 SL Silver chain as a timing chain?

Does anybody use KMC X10 SL chains as the timing chain?

For a lightweight team, roughly 260 pounds combined, is there a good 10 speed chain recommendation for a timing chain?

We are currently using SRAM PC 1091R chains as the timing chain but I am thinking of replacing it with KMC X10 SL chains? The SRAM chain is starting to show its age and is looking like it is time to replace it.

For those teams using timing chains, what is the preferred choice for timing chains (10 speed)?

Thanks!

i don't know much about tandems but couldn't you use a cheaper and more durable 8 speed chain for the timing chain? is there a reason to use a 10speed one?

If the timing sprockets are made for 7 or 8 speed chain, will 10 speed chain even work on them? I assumed the chains were narrower and required correspondingly thinner sprockets. Maybe not.

I believe that 9-11 speed chains are narrower on the outside than 7-8 speed chains but the internal dimensions have not changed.

Sync chain has very little demand place on it. I have used single speed, 8 speed, 9 speed and 10 speed chains.

We're using the KMC X10SL (gold) as our timing chain (and drive chain, both with missing links). Just built up the bike, so it only has a few hundred miles on it, but it functions as you'd expect and is quiet and smooth. They can be had for a good price on ebay, shipped straight from China without the box, which I'm guessing means they are coming straight out of the factory and into the shipping bag. This is on daVinci cranks/timing rings if that is any help.

i'm not an expert but i'm pretty sure the width of the cogs and the internal width of the chain is smaller

The OP is asking if it is OK to use a KMC 10-speed chain to replace the SRAM 10-speed chain already on there. There is no technical issue here.

KMC makes chains for Shimano, as far as I am aware and if that is an indication of their reputation.

To replace the SRAM chain with a KMC one is perfectly acceptable. I use KMC chains on quite a few of our bikes, and will likely use them for the tandem when the times comes to change.

We have been using KMC X9.99 chains all around for a couple of years and very happy. Have not used SL in either 9 or 10. The cutouts seem like they would have to result in some marginally reduced strength, but I have not heard, nor experienced, any such issue, and they sure look good! As others said above, there isn't all that much demand put on the timing chain anyway.

The KMC chains hold up better to tandem loads than SRAM 1091 or 1071. The tandem load is really the rear chain not the timing chain. But KMC all around will be good and somewhat less costly than SRAM. Our rear SRAM 1091's last no more than 1,500 miles / 100,000 feet of climbing, under a light 290# team, but racing / climbing loads. And I hear similar results from a few other tandem teams around town. I don't want to change my chain 6 times a year, so I am going back to the KMC for more durability.
