Tandem Rentals

Hi. No tandem bike or experience, but a friend and I were discussing the idea of doing an upcoming century event on one. In general, do many (any?) LBS rent road tandems? Thanks.

You may be able to find one, we met some folks on a tandem at a metric century who were on a loaner from a bike shop This is probably going to require some phone calls, and I'd suggest that you have a few shakedown rides before riding in a group on a tandem. There is definitely a difference in handling than a single. Also, it's a good idea for the captain to ride as a stoker so that he/she has an idea what it's like for the other person.

Good luck

In my experience the only tandems generally available for rent are the cheap beach and path cruisers types--just about the farthest thing from what you'd want to ride on a century.

You're probably better off contacting a local bike club and asking for someone who might let you borrow one.
