New to tandeming - advice needed

Hello,
First post here.
Bought myself a dawes double edge (not sure of year) and have been gradually upgrading it.
I have put a full SLX/XT 9 speed gearset on it with magura hs33 rim brakes.
An NCX-12 seatpost, and a sturdy manitou front suspension fork.
My question is about 'link-drive' setup.
I would like to install slx/XT cranks but getting them in reverse pedal threads is impossible. (without helicoils).
So what are the pros/cons of same side link drives as opposed to cross-over setups?

Thanks in advance
Mick

I read somewhere that if you fit a triple crank and use the granny ring position for your timing chain this can be done.

Thanks read up a bit on it, mainly sheldon brown.
You can get hold of spacers to put an extra chainring on the outside of the large ones, as I would imagine a larger inner chainring would foul the front mech.
But wondered what others were using.

I have loads of questions in regards this aspect of cycling, like waxing over lubricating chains (I live in the muddy North of England) and also full length gear outers on a tandem.
I have used goretex ride-ons on my mtbs for decades, but with their demise, I have now gone to full cable outer runs, not sure if this will cause issues with the longer cable lengths seen on tandems?
