Finally found a "wide" 26 tire that could take + pressure

I'm posting this in case it helps anyone with a tandem with 26" tires. I had been looking for a fairly wide tire that could also handle high pressure and was puncture resistant. I found it and ordered some, and they showed up today.

specialized infinity armadillo reflect 26 x 1.75 100 psi

100 psi max and flat resistant. I don't think there are a whole lot of 26 inch tires in this width range out there that can handle pressures in this range. Took me a while to find these. So, in the event that it may help someone else, thought I'd post.

FYI

On my half-bike I had a couple of Velocity rims fail near the valve stem hole. They replaced them free of charge, but the rep asked how wide my tires were and what pressure I was running them at. It turns out that wide tires run at high pressures have a way of destroying rims. If that's the case (hey, where are the engineers?), then running a 1.75" tire at 100 psi could be trouble.

This is true. The height of the brake track is also a factor. The longer the lever from the bead to the bed of the rim the less able the brake track is able to resist outward pressure from the wide tire.

My 40mm 650Bs broke multiple Synergy rims at 70-80 psi. Now I use A23 rims and no problems. The A23 has a much shorter unsupported brake track than the Synergy.

Good info. I am not planning to run at 100, but the Contis in the same size that I have on my cargo bike max out at 55 I think, so I wanted something I could run higher than that and stay in the rated range.

specialized infinity armadillo reflect 26 x 1.75 100 psi

The armadillo version of the infinity tire gives a really harsh ride compared to the infinity sport.

I figured it would to some extent. When we take the tandem, we're usually pulling my daughter in a trailer, so reliability (i.e. puncture resistance) trumped all other considerations in this case.

I'm more willing to deal with a flat roadside when alone. Can deal but would rather avoid when there are three of us.
