Holdsworth Gemini Tandem
I figured I would re-post this under the tandem forum as i posted under c and v because i was totally excited about my find. So I figured maybe folks here would be excited. I thought I would share pics of my Holdsworth Gemini Tandem that i got this fall at the T-town Velo Swap. My wife and I are really excited and I have a few adjustments but want to keep this close to original and vintage as it really is almost pristine and original. Being that it will be shared by my wife. I have her panniers on the back, and she will have some pink benotto tape on her bars. All in all...I really got a fantastic deal on this tandem. We're excited. Although I am afraid all rides will have to wait til spring as I have a broken shoulder as well as multiple other injuries as a result of a bicycle accident last wednesday. But here's some photos.
I am making a couple alterations for myself and wife. I am splitting the front and back brakes back to the right and left levers. They are currently both on the left lever. I am installing a third hand brake on the right side top to control the ARAI drum brake. I am installing some New ENE dia compe gran compe non-aero levers to replace the dia compe...safety type levers with a few new cables. I've added some new VO bottle cages also including two that i will use up front off the front of my handlebars. I am really excited overall for this project. Thanks for letting me share. http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6f1286b6.jpg http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9322efa8.jpg http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/...ps876d1b41.jpg http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/...ps78949af9.jpg http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/...psa4a6f6f9.jpg http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/...psaec4a124.jpg http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/...ps16ce877c.jpg |
I forgot to add. My wife wants pink bar tape so i have some new Benotto pink tape and...she wants pink streamers. Gotta give the stoker what she wants. Also, any advice on upgrading tires? The bike has 27 inch rims. And i am wondering how wide I can go with 27 inch rims. I like the idea of a bit more stability. My wife will be brand new to riding a tandem and it has been many years since i rode one. thanks again

Wow! What a beauty! Pink bar tape is super, especially since that is what the stoker wants, and what the stoker wants is - SUPER!
I don't have current experience with 27" tires, but the usual manufacturers make a reasonable selection. Check here (no affiliation): https://www.biketiresdirect.com/search/27in-road-tires I've used Panaracers in a variety of sizes, and always happy with them, so that would probably be my first experiment. Lovely ride feel. |
That is a great find! Will you be sitting up a thumb shift for the drag brake?
|
Your excitement is understandable, and, if it rides as nice as the Mistral I used to have, entirely justified. The streamers will be a kick.
My first thought is 1-1/4" Pasela tires, although the sidewalls are a bit delicate so you might not get high mileage from them on a tandem. I use Gatorskins on a couple bikes and find them reasonably quick and entirely dependable, although they don't quite have the vintage look that perhaps you want. They come in 1-1/4" as well. I don't know if you'll find something wider than that in a 27" except perhaps a cross tire, but I could be mistaken. |
Thank you guys!!
I believe 27 1/4 is the tops as well. That'll have to do for us. We're excited. Paul, i believe i am going to use either a simple friction thumb shifter or mtb type lever for the drum. I've been debating about letting the stoker have a lever....the drums not strong enough to lock up the bike or cause any destruction but may allow my wife some 'control', so to speak. And yea pink streamers will rock. I will post some pics when i get it redone. Not sure how soon that will be...i'm down with a broken shoulder right now from a bike accident last week. not cool... |
You could use a bar-end (barcon) shifter mounted on stoker bar (shorter cable run than on pilot bars).
Also if pilot is using both hands for panic braking he'd not be able to handle a bar end shifter for the drag brake, so stoker activated drag brake is the smarter set-up. Used to tour with 27x1-1/8 and 27x1-1/4 inch tires w-a-y back in the 70s on our tandem. Great lookin' retro tandem!!! |
We run a bar-end on the caption's bar for the drag. I've forgotten to release after a downhill a couple of times and the stoker said she didn't want the responsibility.

Just a few photos for update to the tandem project. I got some nice bar end caps for the tandem. Found them on Etsy. My wife loved them, so they were a gift to her. Also Switched around and put some non-aero dia compe gran compe holey levers with new housing, a friction set up for the ARAI drum brake. I added an extra bottle cage on the front for myself. May add another once we ride and see how it all feels. And i re-wrapped the handlebars with a bit of our own style.
My shoulder is mending slowly so I hope to try this all out in the spring! |
