TandemsEast catalog

Got the Tandems East yearly catalog in the mail and while perusing it, came across one heck of a great deal
Ordered a Topolino carbon spoke tandem wheelset (not disc-capable) from Mel at the great close-out price of $700 + shipping/tax!
This wheelset retails at $1,299. Seems Toplino got bought out by a competitor.
Our Zona tandem has logged over 40,000 miles and so far have replaced rear wheel once, so we are probably due for another set of wheels soon.
Am familiar with the Topolinos as I test rode, and bought, a singles bike wheelset when they first hit the market at Interbike years ago.
Have ridden these bike wheels for 20,000+ miles on my racing bike and had no issues; never even had to true the wheels. Did adjust the front hub once in all those miles (photo of my single bike with the Topolinos).
So if any of you tandemistas want a light Topolino tandem wheelset at a great close-out price, this may be an opportunity.
Have no official connection with TandemsEast but have known Mel and Barb for decades.
Pedal on TWOgether!

Hope you have good luck with those. AFAIK, no tandem teams have posted any long term positive feedback. If you can get 20,000 miles on these without failure, I'll buy you (Rudy) a new set of tires.

While I've had great luck/usage on my Topolinos on my single bike I am hoping for similar results on our tandem.
We are a sub-250 lbs duo on our twicer and that may affect longevity (we think/hope)!

My catalogue arrived here in Australia, a real treat. Just back from a trip and haven't had time to go through it in detail yet.

Not at all. Oval carbon kevlar vs round BPO and the ends are completely different too.

Here's one thread providing relevant tandem Topo feedback: https://www.bikeforums.net/tandem-cyc...bad-worse.html

As with any new product time will tell about the durability. The link below is from an earlier discussion regarding these wheels.

Yes, apparently time did tell. TandemGeek began using these wheels back in 2008 (also see his blog)? The follow-up post link "bad to worse" is the more recent impression from 05-10-13, somewhat blunt about it too.

At the closeout price of $700 + tax & shipping the Topolinos are a great price comparer to $1,300.
In our estimation we are close to needing another wheel set for our 40,000+ mile Zona tandem.
At ages 82/79 we no longer hammer or do the climbs/distances we did 20 to 40 years ago. If these wheels hold up, that's great; if not, we'll chalk it up to experience!
We sorta do what we call maintenance miles to keep us in fairly decent shape. 20 miles here and there on our tandem, like today's ride.
Enjoyed a great wildlife exhibit at our local state park with all kinds of snakes, Gila monsters and some very knowledgeable folks eager to explain things.
Met up with about 10 fellow single bikers at our local bakery/coffee shop and swapped tales while enjoying lunch on the patio. Yes, it was in high 60s with sunshine. Arizona is not a bad place to be this time of year!
Got in 5,100+ miles in 2014; although we aren't 'fast' any more, we are persistent!
Everyone have a great 2015!
Still pedalin' TWOgether!
