Downtown Houston and south, on a red rental B-cycle bike

With a Saturday and half-Sunday off during a business trip to Houston (from New Orleans), I rented one of the "rental rack" bikes from a downtown park.

Three speeds, heavy as hell, clunky steering with the large (and convenient) front basket, but still fun and a nice way to get around during the weekend when there's lots less traffic. The bikes look like this:

They were all in good condition, enclosed chainguard so good with whatever you're wearing. Seats not adjustable, so pick one that's the right height, and squeeze tires, most of them are pumped up well, not all. They have a modern-type "dyno-hub", so nighttime riding is lit, which was very nice, and much safer.

As a weekend ride, I found downtown to be fun. Lots of city parks, nice ones with a pond down by the convention centers. then i went out to Montrose, then south to the museum and Rice U district. MMA was very nice, Rice campus was pretty and empty during Christmas break, and riding Fannin and San Jacinto back to town was fine. Houston (like New Orleans) is an excellent 3-speed town since it's mostly flat. Bike trail along the Allen Parkway is pretty nice. Buffalo Bayou can bring mud to the lowest parts of the lowest trails, i discovered this jogging/slip-sliding near downtown.

I should have brought my clip-on mirror along, there was a "craft-type" bike shop on Montrose but they didn't have geek mirrors. I meant to ride the Metro but with the bike, there wasn't the need.
