Yeah because once the water goes down they gotta go in there and clear away all the mud, dirt, and debris that will be left behind all over the path.

Harris County Flood Warning System

The gauge is showing it holding pretty steady at around 95.1-95.2’ for the last 2 days even with the releases. I believe the point where the bridge goes under water beyond that gate is around 85-87ish?So at that rate, even with no more rain, you are looking at weeks or months before the trail is passable through the middle of the park again.

the sci guy 04-27-16 04:16 PM

balls.

68venable 05-02-16 02:06 PM

That's crazy.

the sci guy 05-17-16 08:37 AM

Water was down in the Bayou, I thought I'd be gold to finally ride all the way through Terry Hershey to work this morning.

whelp....

THP between Kirkwood & BWY8 is a mess. This is between Kirkwood & Wilcrest. There are two sections closed on that stretch. It'll be months before they get around to fixing this probably.

And the entire path is straight up closed between Wilcrest & BWY8, so I couldn't go down and see what kind of damage there was down that stretch.

james_v 05-26-16 08:57 AM

What's the latest with George Bush Park?

the sci guy 05-26-16 11:33 AM

Haven't been over there yet. Was hoping to this Saturday or Sunday. I imagine its still flooded because THP is still flooded. Plus it'll be another few weeks until they clean the path of debris.

james_v 05-27-16 01:57 PM

Well with the rain we had yesterday and now most of today, it can't be too good.

the sci guy 06-26-16 10:14 AM

Been out of town for pretty much the entire month of June until now. Can anyone tell me how Terry Hershey is doing? Planning to bike to work tomorrow but need to know if I can take my road bike or if I need to ride my mtb for the gravel trail instead.

Rollfast 06-26-16 02:36 PM

Well, the park's website was rather useless...

Try this The Anthills (Terry Hershey Park) | GHORBA

This is much better and the reports are recent within the last day or two it looks like.

the sci guy 08-23-16 04:44 PM

Looks like they're going to be fixing the damaged parts of THP in the next few coming weeks: Flood-Damaged Buffalo Bayou Banks, Trails in Terry Hershey Park to See Emergency Repairs - Energy Corridor District

Very happy to see this as I figured it would be something they'd put off for a few years since it probably wasn't important.

faulker479 08-26-16 08:42 AM

The trail is used so much and people are just passing right by the closed road signs. It is a real hazard so maybe they are afraid of a lawsuit if they don't get it fixed ASAP

I was surprised how far in some of the eroded spots were.

faulker479 09-21-16 01:59 PM

Have they repaired the blacktop path yet?

I'm one of them - the only one I skip is the ones underneath Wilcrest, so I go up and cross Wilcrest instead of taking the path under.
It's a daily commute route for me. I'd rather take my chances on the whole thing collapsing at the moment I ride past it than change my route to ride down briar forest drive the whole way - which, btw, by wife would not allow. I think the same goes for lots of other people.

Nope. It was delayed because of all teh rain we got a few weeks ago. Not sure when the new start date is.

the sci guy 09-29-16 09:47 PM

Construction started today just to the west of BWY8. That section is closed for real now. There are detours you can make though to still make it to or from Wilcrest.

Tommy1955 09-30-16 06:37 AM

Glad to hear they're starting the repair. It has always amazed me what water can do. I plan to go to Hershey Park this Saturday but start at Memorial Mews close to Eldridge. Ride to the dam where it runs parallel to I-10, then the bike path back to Kirkwood or to where you see the first major erosion of the path.

Are you a decent paced rider (16-20)? Me and a few peeps from my neighborhood start every (usually) Saturday morning from the Memorial Mews lot as well (we meet at the lil covered bench pavilion between 8-8:15am)
We do about 30+ miles - more once they finish fixing the bridge in the middle of GBP and the main North South route reopens.
We're rolling tomorrow. You're welcome to join if you can hang.

Side note: I basically ride the entire length of THP almost daily to commute to work (Memorial Mews to BWY8). The majority of the erosion points you could get around safely. But, now they got heavy equipment and fences and stuff up so there's no sneaking around for a while lol.

I'm not nearly a decent rider as you! I generally get there between 8:30am and 8:45am. I generally ride between 13 and 14 mph...faster along the dam if I have a tail wind. I've had my new bike for about 3 months and I went ahead and already replaced the chain for I had 1,640 miles on it. Bike Barn (Westchase store) told me that it was only about 50% worn and could go farther but I changed it anyway. I average 100 to 125 miles per week. I think that if I had a road bike like you all probably do, then I could maybe go faster but I'm really enjoying myself. I've probably seen you out there and you've probably seen me. I'm the only person I know that rides out there (or anywhere) that wears black bike tights. I wear them because I like the compression on my legs and keeps the sun off. I go to THP on the weekends and generally do between 20 and 30 miles. I enjoy talking to people out there. Everyone is very friendly however, I don't know if they talk about me wearing tights.

Tommy1955 11-25-16 10:58 AM

It looks like they're making good progress on the trail repairs. I heard from one rider that the bridge that got washed away going to George Bush is rebuilt but still needs paving. If this is true, then it won't be long before they open that too. Excited about that because I haven't been over there yet.

the sci guy 11-25-16 12:09 PM

Yeah the bridge in GBP is pretty much done. We rode over it last week. They just need to pave each end so it connects to the path.
The repairs in THP are really inconvenient for my commute to work but I'm glad it's getting done.

Tommy1955 12-03-16 07:45 AM

Just saw this notice online posted 12-1-16. Hopefully this means it's now open (to get to the bridge). I'll have to check it out when the weather gets better.

whoa whoa whoa - THP is closed from Dairy Ashford to BWY8??
I know there were a few closed sections I had to skirt around - but it's been over a week since I rode to work - is this a new development? That's like, 1/2 of the park?
If that's true that's some bull****.

They have had "trail closed" signs posted for some time now but a lot of people go around the tape or whatever and still ride. I normally turn around just east of Dairy Ashford where this 1st erosion is located. I'm wanting to ride the Bush Park trail but the bridge was washed out. I'm hoping now (according to the report), it's finished and open. I'm going to try and check it out later this week.

the sci guy 12-04-16 08:42 PM

Yeah I've been riding almost the whole length of the park - just going around the closed sections- with the exception of the section just to the west of the playground/treatment plant just west of BWY8 - for that I've been cutting through the neighborhood just north of that area because there is that road that leads down to the trail next to the playground.
But every other lil patch I've just been going in the grass around the taped off workers.

colonelrascals 12-04-16 10:05 PM

this rain needs to cut out.
