Braes Bayou Trails
Anyone on this forum regularly ride the braes trail?! Looking for people to ride with. I usually hit the trail 5 times a week, if anyone would like to meet up and do a ride together.

Its a little far to ride to from my house but is like to ride it again once all the construction is done building the new sections. I rode it a few years ago and it was still missing some key pieces that connected it all the way from the west end the east end.

The part of Braes Bayou with the trail being discussed here is in Southwest Houston, into the Medical Center area. Look on your smart phone map for N. and S. Braeswood, which run along the bayou. This is mostly urban terrain, not a nice park-like green space trail, though some interesting birds can be seen.

I saw on Facebook that they are beginning work on a west side Brays extension that will take it from the west end at the Fiesta Mart on Gessner northward along the bayou up toward Richmond in the Westchase area, meaning you would conceivably be able to ride from Terry Hershey down through the Walnut Bend neighborhood (i do every day on my commute), carefully cross Westheimer (yikes) at Rogerdale, and make your way down to Richmond and pick up the Brays trail and ride it all the way to the Med Center. I'm game for that.
Wish they'd install some pedestrian/bike bridges over roads like Westheimer though. Seems like a no brainer to me. But, then, things that make sense rarely happen.....

It's paved. There was a lot of tar sealing up the long cracks last time I rode it. (2-3 years ago) It can also be pretty narrow in places, and you will share it with runners, walkers and their dogs. The worst part to me is you will cross over some very busy roads. It's more of a commuter trail for me.

A segment on the West end became passable recently. Traveling West, the path continues under Beltway 8, 59, through urban-camper land (homeless village), and ends at South Kirkwood Rd. Part of the path is hard-pack granite sand. The section under 59 (entrance & exit ramps, median, main lanes) has very limited vertical clearance; it's a dark place I can imagine trolls inhabiting. The distance from one end of the current Bayou path to the other is about 30 miles.

FYI The Brays Bayou trail is pretty much complete. There are still completing a few sections on the east side of Mac Gregor but it is easy to get around. Nice ride from Mac Gregor Park to Mason Park. Not too difficult from there to go all the way to Brady's Landing then up Navigation back to Allen's Landing (White Oak/Buffalo Bayou Connection.)

Sure, I haven't yet figured out how to successfully post photos here or I would map it for you. The section between Calhoun and MLK is now complete. However, the section between MLK and Spur 5 is not. So I jump up on MLK walk bike over tracks and turn east on Wheeler. Pick up the trail again at Wheeler and Spur 5.
I would suspect that section to be completed soon as last time I was there 8 days ago they were still working on it.

The main interruption is MLK. I didn't even need to dismount to cross the raised median & tracks. The pathway along Wheeler is open. One other interruption, but it is a bike friendly street
Yes, it is a nice ride east of MacGregor park.
FYI, the path under Wayside and 45 will be closed a couple days this week.
