Riding Alt 90

I'm considering a ride between my home near Katy, TX and the Spoetzl brewery in Shiner, TX. However a siginficant portion (54 miles) would involve riding Alt 90 East between Eagle Lake and Shiner. Just wondering if anybody has any experience riding that road and how it went for them from a traffic perspective. 2 lane road but has a nice shoulder on either side but still just curious how was road debris, driver (in)attention, etc.. Thanks.

Maybe the best assessment would be to drive that portion and see for yourself since it is not too far away. That would get you the latest info versus someone riding awhile back.

Just looking at the map for a minute, I would head south to between Hungerford and El Campo and follow those smaller roads west.

What would be you're route to Eagle Lake from Katy? I've driven 1093 from Wallis to Eagle Lake several times and have not been impressed with it. It loses the shoulders and the road surface is much poor quality than it is east of Wallis. For those reasons I have not ridden my bike west of Wallis to Eagle Lake.

Liked 18 Times in 13 Posts the route first as others have said. Highway 90 is not a bike friendly route.

Typical footage of how Hghwy Alt 90 necks down. Dozers which chew up the surface of the road abound (rural farm communities).

I try to drive the routes on Google Earth before picking a route.

Oh man! This area used to be part of the old Shiner Bash route when they used to have it from San Antonio, Austin, and Houston. I rode all three over 5 years and gotta say Houston was by far the easiest of the three routes. I used to ride that part of 90 from time to time when I live in West Houston and would do the West Oaks ride and turn it into a century. Been some years since I've been on it; what did you find out?
