I've been commuting to work for the past month, averaging about 150 miles a week. But this week I had 2 days that I wasn't able to ride in because I needed to get the kids someplace and the timing just didn't work out for me.

So I'm looking to pick up 50 or 60 miles on Sunday morning to save my week. Are any of you guys from the Rockwall area that could recommend a route over that way? It seems like there should be some good roads over there or in the Heath area.

Rockwall county has great FM road to ride. Hang a right on FM 740 once you cross the lake from 66 and stay on it after you cross I 30,that will take you into Heath and the other FM roads. Most of them will be hilly. I live in Royse City and FM 548 is a nice ride. Not a lot of traffic most of the time.

Ride Hot Rocks next Saturday if you can, It will give you a nice tour of Rockwall and the many backroads in the county.

Thanks Chris, I'll check it out. I looked at the Hot Rocks route and that looks pretty good too. I'll go have a look at the calendar.

RC_Spinner, thanks for the tip on the Hot Rocks route. I rode it this morning, and it's a really enjoyable ride. It was my first ride of that distance, so it was nice to see a couple of places I could refill the bottles in the Royse City / Heath area.

I've gotta say, I like the Heath roads a lot better, there were a couple of roads up by Josephine that about put my hands and feet to sleep. Not sure if I'll be able to make it out there again for the official ride, but it's a good route anyway.

I live in Garland and head up into Rockwall county on Sunday mornings when I have the time. I have yet to be disappointed with any of the roads I have explored, Okay, some are rougher than others, but compared to what I am used to further in towards Dallas,et al, the traffic is minimal and the countryside is refreshing. I use Gmaps-pedometer.com to plot routes and mileage, so I don't just head out completely blind without a plan. I have ridden to Greenville on 66 (in route to Sulpher Springs) and it isn't too bad a road either. I really don't think you can go wrong anywhere in the county.

I was thinking of riding the Hot Rocks 100k this weekend. Can anyone tell me the general layout, such as where the hilly parts of the route?

There's nothing all that steep actually. There are a few smaller rolling hills at the beginning coming North out of Rockwall, and a few back to back rolling hills down by the Heath area. Pretty enjoyable ride all in all. I'm still trying to work out the family schedule to see if I can ride in it this weekend too.

That ride on Hwy 6 and on FM 1777 is chip seal hell! I missed Hot Rocks today, as I was driving home from Las Vegas(my wife does not like to fly). Always next year I guess. However I did drive through Wichita Falls today and I am happy to report it was only 103 degress. Two weeks to go!!!
