Ride advice-Amarillo to Palo Duro

I'm back into road biking after 30 yrs of non-activity and 5 yrs of running. When my knee went bad and the doc said no more running, I dusted off my 1972 Peugeot UO-8 and learned what I'd been missing. Now I'm living in the Wichita, KS area, where the country blacktop is flat, smooth and fun. I'm planning to drive to Amarillo next week and want to ride to Palo Duro Canyon. Does 1541 south from town have a road bike friendly surface? Any other ideas in the area for a roadie? I'm looking forward to the visit.

It's been awhile, but I've been there and that road was in good shape then. There are a couple hills where you cross the river, but nothing compared to the climb back out of the canyon. Good luck, and I would bring gears.
