Galveston Causeway Ride
BF member Davidad and I rode to Galveston today.
Dave was born on the Island in the early 1940's We have been waiting for the New Causeway completion for a ride to Galveston. Today was the day. Temps 72* to 88* Sunny. Winds 5 to 12 mph. We left at 9:30 AM and returned at 2:30 PM Total 86 miles for me. Just getting on 45 South: http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...alveston/1.jpg Going Up: http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...alveston/2.jpg Debris on the shoulder: http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...alveston/3.jpg See The Top: http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...alveston/4.jpg The shoulder was very ruff the entire ride. The Traffic Noise was Super Loud and Annoying. Dave riding down to the island at 30 MPH: http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...alveston/5.jpg 8,424 Miles in the last 30 weeks without a Flat. Galveston gives him a Flat Welcome on The Causeway. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...alveston/6.jpg http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...alveston/7.jpg The Galveston County Daily News, The Oldest Texas Newspaper Still in Operation: http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...alveston/9.jpg Shiners Childrens Hospital (Burn Center) Now Closed: http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...lveston/10.jpg John Sealy Hospital ER Now Closed: http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...lveston/11.jpg |
That looks like a neat ride.
I was looking at the map a while back. It looks like I could start in Clute (my old home town), go out FM 2004 to Hwy 6 or somewhere over there, go out to Galveston, then circle back down through San Luis Pass and in, and have right at 100 miles. Some day I shall try that. Some day. Many years ago, I tried walking out on the causeway from the island side to watch for trains. I got to see a tugboat with barges go under the bridge, got to see a train go out, that was pretty neat. The shoulder was about 5' wide, it seemed like, with traffic whooshing by at high speed all the time. |
Thanks again for another nice photo thread.
StephenH, sounds like that would be a fun ride. And most of the year you could call it the "Crosswind 100". |

Hey 10 Wheels, just curious how you take photos when you ride. Do you have a handlebar mount, or do you just hold the camera while riding? The perspective looks low enough to be a shot from the handlebars.

Fantastic ride report, thank you for sharing.
I've been thinking of riding down to Galveston on the new causeway, I guess I'll give it a try one of these weekends! |

I don't know how to get to 6 without going through 2004, but there is a way. I suggest you find it. The ride from the causeway to San Luis Pass is nice- shoulder the whole way except for a 1.5 mile section right before Jamaica Beach- otherwise its nice. |

If you go from Clute- stay off 2004. Its a nightmare for about 20 miles. The last 7 or so to get to HWY 6 are with a shoulder, but the other 20 are miserable.
