I'm ok with hot, but 105 is crazy. it was 90 at 9am this morning on my ride into work.

I had thought I liked the heat, but, with 100+ degrees PLUS the coastal humidity, I find myself exhausted within minutes, even after dark.

On Saturday around 2pm I was thinking how much I really really really miss sleet and shoveling show. Until that time I had never dry heaved after fighting nodding off a few times. 2/3rd of the way through my 200k I pulled off into some gas station after that in valley something or another east of forestberg and passed out in the back for over an hour. Kind of thinking hey if someone steals my bike I can get a taxi back to my car and I won't have to ride in that heat again
I had plenty of water sunscreen and cover even kept my average heart rate at 120 but it was just sooo hot and unending with that sun way up there. The back spasm inducing 2 miles of chip without seal each way made it a special treat and that was with 1.5" tires and a rear suspension


Maybe I'll start my next 200k at 10pm or so after it has cooled down to under 900 er 90


Oh and I only saw one cyclist around 8am and they weren't dressed like the above.

200k in this heat?!?! Sheesh. I thought I had it tough doing 40+ yesterday. I drank 24ounces of water before I left, drank 68 more over 2+ hrs of riding, AND took a 30 minute break in a Starbucks where I drank a grande iced coffee. I can't imagine how much I would have to drink to do 200k in this.

I drink alot, possibly too much, but I drip buckets. I think I drank about 140oz of water on the first 100k with some perp in part of it. I think my perpetium is bad or I just can't take the stuff. It made me sick halfway through my 400k in march and on my 200k at the turn around my body rejected the mere hint of taste of it. Silly me switched the tubes on my two water bladders when I filled them with ice water so infected both with the taste.

To try to calm my stomach I took 80 oz of Cherry 7up and 64 oz of G2 between my stop at the turn around and a stop halfway back. Probably only 50oz of water on the way back with all the other drinking and trying to avoid the taste.

In July I think there is a night 200k but I"m not sure what time they are starting. Whenever they start at least it'll be cooling down as we ride instead of heating up.

I went out riding yesterday afternoon, just took a 24 oz bottle of Gatorade. Before I got home, I'd stopped twice, for 32 oz Gatorade bottle, 20 oz 7-up, and ice cream bar, and still got home and drank probably 2 quarts.

What route where you riding, evblazer?

The June brevet started at 5:00 am, the July is scheduled for 7:00 PM, maybe that's the way to do it.

And, I've noticed when it gets hot, you just don't see anyone out, you don't see scantily clad females.

I rode cheeburgercheeburger completely solo. Van Alstyne to Forestburg and back again. I didn't find any hills I could coast down and roll up the next two though

I'm really wavering between never doing another one again or doing the night one and at least finishing out the year. My last two or three have been brutal but not the smell blood, puke on your bike and collapse and the end fun kinda brutal

Well, Model A's may roll farther than a bike does, or that road might have been flattened a tad in the last 60 years, too. And I assumed he topped that first hill faster than 20 mph, too. I remember when I was a teenager, the bridges on that stretch were all 1-lane bridges. (That was late 70's, not sure when they changed them out.)

I got in 31 miles this evening. Even hit a patch or two of "cool" air. But still, by the time I was done, I'd gone through 24 oz of Gatorade, 32 oz of Gatorade, and 32 oz of water. Over a half-gallon. Good thing it wasn't hot. I wrung the sweat out of my shorts and shirt when I got home.

3 liters of water + a half liter of strong gatorade in a platy bottle with a tube FTW

keeps me going on my 3 hour long, 6 am saturday morning rides. but that's probably nothing compared to what other people do around here

I have thought about stopping at a starbucks on my way home, sort of as a reward, but every time I think about all those empty calories, I say to myself a hearty breakfast smoothie will be much more rewarding.
then I have pizza in the afternoon =0P

but yah- stay cool! if you feel tired, REST

FYI, Starbucks is actually a great place to get your bottles filled. You can usually feel safe leaving your bike outside because of heavy foot traffic, and they will either take your bottle at the barista and fill it, or many have water fountains outside the restrooms.

And I drink plain old iced coffee, not that calorie laden stuff :-D

One of the many things that suck about hot and humid weather: If you're a tad hungover and very dehydrated, can't even think about getting on the bike.
