ALERT - Houston City Council meeting on METRO Light Rail (Thurs 2/11/10, 2p CST)

Bicyclists need to show up at this meeting, sign up to speak during the public comment period, and ask City Council and the Mayor to influence METRO to accommodate bikes on the Light Rail System! Not only in the cars, but bike racks on the streets too. Street bike racks are NOT being included, per the University Corridor Final EIS, just published.

For background on this issue see: https://biketrain.blogspot.com

This is the most important bikes-on-trains meeting that will take place ever!

Here's a report I just downloaded which can be used to argue for more to be done in Houston and TX (and the entire country) regarding bicycling and pedestrian programs. The data in Bicycling and Walking in the U.S. 2010 Benchmarking Report reflects all 50 states and 51 cities which include Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso. We are way behind in supporting the two programs in Texas. Note: the report is 14MB in size.

From the BikeHouston Facebook page:

Peter Wang, Aaron Chang, and Regina Garcia addressed the Transportation, Infrastructure, and Aviation Committee Thursday at City Hall.

The Council Members who spoke were all very supportive of improving bicyclist access to the light rail system. They were Ms. Clutterbuck (by proxy), Ms. Noriega, Mr. Bradford, Mr. Gonzales, Mr. Costello, and Committee Chair Ms. Lovell.

No Council Members spoke in opposition to bikes on trains. Overall - an extremely positive reception from the City Council.

During the meeting, Council Member Bradford expressed some frustration (quite pointedly) to METRO Solutions Managing Director Couch concerning the fact that two years have elapsed since the issue was raised and still the cycling community was not satisfied.
