looking for moderate paced saturday ride in Houston
Anyone know of any moderately paced rides on Saturday around the Houston area? Me and a buddy are looking to join a group who ride about 40 miles around a 16-18 mph pace.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Theres tons of them. You can go to www.bikebarn.com and go to the "rides" page. They have the rides with the paces listed by location. You can also try www.meetup.com and search cycling for the same. The 'come ride with us' group is very nice to ride with. Theres also www.thetexasoutdoors.com we have rides occasionally. Try riding "Terry Hershey Park" at the beltway to the end of "George Bush Park" at S. Fry rd and back. Its a solid 34ish miles and really enjoyable. Theres enough people out there. Actually, look up "Bicycle World and Fitness" bike shop. They ride thru that park on saturday at that pace if you are interested. I hope you found some of this helpful.

Groups of pretty much every speed range head out from Zube park Northwest of houston on some nice routes that have little traffic and lots of cyclists.
It's a large club - and they head out in clusters based on speed.
There are routes of 25,30,35,40,50, and 65 miles plus some longer ones too.
I rode in a paceline for awhile with the "Come Ride With Us" folks during Katy Flatland - they seemed really nice too.

It would be cool to see the Saturday morning rides, that left from the footbridge by the JCC, start up again.

Rex, that group last summer was my introduction to cycling. I miss those rides. The only people I still see or contact is Kwrides ( not on this board any more ) and Yeamac ( we ran into each other last Friday on the bayou trails ). Yeamac was talking about a ride to the state park again, interested in going?

How about next Saturday, Aug. 31 for a ride to Brazos Bend State Park? About 80 miles round trip from the McDonalds at Hillcroft and Braeswood. That is just west from the JCC. Would start out south down Hillcroft. 6:30am start time would work well to beat the heat (somewhat) yet it is still light enough to not need lights at that time. Post to this thread if you are in.

Ha-ha, oops. Meant JULY 31. Pace could be decided by whoever shows up. Maybe start at 19mph and come down if needed.
gtragitt, here is a route map going down to Freeport which starts the same way (first 27 miles). Then at Rosharon take FM1462 west to Brazos Bend State Park. There are a few options. For instance, outbound I now prefer at Mile 6 to stay on Fuqua around to Chimney Rock, and then either take Chimney Rock to McHard or cut through on Court Road to McHard. Also, at Mile 25 you will see Sandy Point Road, which cuts off maybe half a mile or so on back roads going to the State Park. We took that the one time and it was a nice deserted road.
The nice thing about that route is that it is pretty straightforward and if you stick to the major roads, you would have to try real hard to get lost.
As for distance, in the past 4 months my longest ride has been 25 miles, so I imagine I'll be slowing down some by the second half of the ride. aggarcia hasn't gotten a lot of distance rides in either, so we are probably all in the same sort of shape. Except for my friend Steve, who is also coming. He just rode to Michigan doing 120+ mile days. Also, one other thing to point out is being an out-n-back, one can always turn around early and head home. Turning around at Rosharon gives a nice 54 mile ride.
One last thing -- drink plenty of fluids before we leave and bring at least 2 water bottles since it will be hot. Would also suggest to bring snacks. There are a few places to stop along the way, but once we pass highway 6 (usually 1 hour into the ride) the next stop isn't until Rosharon. And if we take the Sandy Point Road cut-off, there will not be any services until around mile 39 just outside of Brazos Bend State park, probably 2 hours 20 minutes into the ride. So if everyone is up to it, it would be nice to try to ride the 39 miles outbound without a stop. But again, it's no race and we certainly can stop anytime we need to. Will certainly all stop if someone gets a flat. On the return trip we could split up into a faster and slower group if there are huge speed differences. Don't forget we should have a tailwind on the way home. Weather is looking fantastic, hot and sunny -- don't forget the sunscreen!

Bike riding this weekend July 31
If anyone is interested there is an unofficial Time Trial event this Saturday through the Sam Houston National Forest near New Waverly. The entrance fee is $5 for those brave enough (or foolhardy enough) to suffer the heat and humidity for 54 miles..!!

Good luck tomorrow, if I didn't have other plans for that morning I would consider riding out from Friendswood and meet up with you in Rosharon or farther along 1462. I've never ridden that far in such hot weather before though.

Regardless, I reckon I am only going to be good for 20-something miles, at best.
