POLL: Denton Texas Monthly Swap meets?

Hi guys,

Sorry if this is in the wrong sub-forum. But just thinking about running a few local swap meets for all the dallas guys. We are opening a new bicycle shop in Denton Texas (Sprockets) and I have a great background in promotion and advertising. I will eventually be able to get a few sponsors to the event such as Clif, Vitamin Water and possibly a few others depending on its turnout. Our location is easy to get to and right off the highway.

Just looking to see if anyone is down to do a monthly swap meet so please vote for or against it...I dont see why anyone would be against a swap meet but please give us your honest opinion.

It would be a great way to clean out your garages as well as stimulate the 30,000+ students up here at UNT to start riding bikes!

I voted no, not because I would not come up there, but because I would likely only come to it once or twice a year.

Good luck and be safe.

Ditto on the once-or-twice per year. I'm all in favor of having the event, but not the kind of guy that's going to single-handedly keep it in business, either.

Agreed; monthly is too frequently. Let demand build up. There is a great swap meet in south Ft Worth in late Jan/early Feb every year (sponsored by Colonel's bikes and includes some racing). Bikes Inc. does one up in Hurst in October. I would think doing one in April, then again in July would give me 4 swap meets a year (I live in Ft Worth). Are there other swap meets on the Dallas side of town? I think we could do it more often than twice a year and would probably even drive up to Denton for one, but monthly is too much.

Also, look at the audiences... the January one seems to be mostly roadies with some vintge stuff, the October one has a pretty strong vintage slant. So... maybe specialize in utility bikes & recumbents for one meet... fixies for another? I dunno, but if you make each one special they might generate more buzz.

If you build it, they will come, though.... maybe give it a try and see who shows up.

Being of college age, and having attended UNT last Fall, I can tell you that I would attend every month if possible. Maybe I'm a bike nerd, or maybe college aged bikers are more into finding super cheap deals. I can tell you that while living in College Station I went on three consecutive monthly pilgrimages to Austin for Frankenbike with some friends. Denton has a large number of bikes, and it seems that it could really benefit from this since it doesn't have it's very own CL page. It's hard for bike deal networking.

Now I live in Austin though, and it's mostly because of Frankenbike ; )
