Tour Dallas Saturday April 2nd

It's time to start doing longer rides again and lose some pounds! I am registering for this tonight. Anyone else doing this? It is supposed to be a real nice day with highs in the 80's so ride time should be in the 60's to lower 70's and plenty of sunshine.

I did it two or three times, and last year was a volunteer for the ride. I enjoyed it, but will either be out of town or doing a 300k this weekend.

I will be there and am really looking forward to it. My girlfriend goes on it every year and says it's a blast. I will have on a Texas Flag Mellow Johnny's Jersey and will be riding a black Cannondale CAAD 9 with red lettering. If you see me say hi.

I will. I am riding a red Trek 1500, wearing plain red jersey w/ gray down the sides and gray/silver shorts. Going to REI to register and packet pick up tomorrow instead of by internet and waiting inline at the ride.

Had a lot of fun out there Saturday. I don't think the weather cold have been any better. Some spots had some really rough roads rife with cracks and potholes. But for the most part the route was a lot of fun. I'm impressed the route went up Winstead. Even though it's short, that's a fairly steep hill for Dallas standards. The climb up Ellsworth road (I believe) was great. I had no idea that climb was even there. The organizers did a great job, the only thing I wondered about were all the silly cones. I assume they were to restrict riders to the right hand lane, but no one seemed to pay attention. All they were was another road hazard to a pretty hazardous course. Tough to beat views like this.

Just putting that ride on is an interesting challenge. Being an all-urban route, it needs a lot of traffic control at intersections. I remember one year, the cone & sign people didn't get their job done, and they delayed the start a half-hour while they got a bunch of extra policemen out. The year before that, i think they had some pretty serious wrecks from some of the cracks you mention.

The last several months, I've been riding off and on with Greater Dallas Bicyclists. On their winter routes, they sometimes go down to White Rock Lake and sometimes do any of various urban routes. But on the last urban route they did, I noticed there was one guy on a road bike, I was on my Sojourn, and everyone else was either on a mountain bike or a hybrid with wider tires than mine.

On Saturday, Tour Dallas was going on, a rando group was doing a 300k ride, and the regular bike shop ride was going on. It was an "off" week, so I went to see my folks down south. And it was a work day at church doing building repairs. So there were 5 different places I needed to be at the same time.

A few days late, but here is my review:

What a fantastic day for a bike ride!!! I loved the controlled staggered start and could see where there would have been big problems if it was a mass start. The roughest road seemed to be on the way back from the lake just before the second rest stop which was well stocked (as well as the first one at White Rock). as per most rides, there was a bit of carnage. Heck, after registering that morning and going back to the truck, I saw a guy sink his front tire into one of those groves in the pavement @ City Hall!
My official stats were:
On the bike time: 2hrs 5mins 51sec. Distance 28.0 miles Avg speed 13.2mph Max: 26mph Total time 2hrs 30mins

My time was slowed by a wardrobe malfunction I had during the ride. the bottom of my cleats came off my shoes. The first was right at the 8mile/20-30 mile Split headed up Swiss. The second one came off at the first rest stop. that made for a fun time going up Winstead and then thru the Ellsworth uphill.

Shortly after I created this thread, I hurt my knee while doing squats and it was quite questionable if I was going to do it because on Thursday I could barley walk and I was quite dissapointed. But thankfully it got better enough by ride day even though it cost me 5 extra bucks.
I'll post my pics later.
Chris
