Windhaven parkway is the best long climb in Dallas. North Carrollton/Plano. I usually run it back and forth for an hour for training before i go on the open road.

I lived across from Lake White Rock for 12 years and really miss it. It is a beautiful park with a flat jogging trail with a short drop/climb by the spillway. There is a nice little back road from the dam on the East side. The one on Loving used to stop me halfway. I don't know the numbers. If you are a glutton for punishment try Brown Blvd in Arlington between N Collins and Ascension.
Now I live in Houston and actually miss hills. The going downhill part.

Hi
There are some hills around White Rock in the neighborhood section. When want to add hills to my route I ride that Loving section which adds some short but good hills.
Flag Pole is nice but you have to cross Loop 12 to get to it and with the road work going on there it is sort of a pain.
I am looking for more hills to add to my route also between Garland Road (78) and Ferguson.
Do any of you ride on the east side of Dallas and if you do know any good long routes?
I get really tired of having to drive to North Dallas, Plano, Richardson area.

Check out Richardson Bike Mart's south loop. https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/60572848

Cool! Thanks for the lead on this!
Have you ridden it and any input on it?

loving tops out at about 8% at its peak
west shore hits about 6-7%, tokalon is the same.
https://app.strava.com/activities/20261142

the bigger climbs to the east (well, maybe not bigger, but more of them...) are out in sunnyvale, and a couple down towards mesquite on the standard "south loop"

the better/bigger climbs to this area are down in cedar hill though, where you can find a couple of (just barely) cat4 climbs. lake ridge pkwy that someone mentioned is a good one. so is camp wisdom. here's a typical 'cedar hill route' from the white rock area -
https://app.strava.com/activities/14049613 (someone posted a similar route with more hill loops above too)
valley view drive is what we call the 3 bears... 3 semi-long (about a mile maybe?) climbs in succession that get steeper. the 3rd hill is a shorter one that hits 20%.

there's also a short one up saddle ridge rd (goes up to a mtn bike park) that is short and painful at ~16%.

mineral wells (1.5hr drive west) has a few good long climbs too, but nothing like climbing a mountain. talimena is probably the closest drive for that kind of climbing.

austin is also good for some fairly consistent up and down climbing, but again, nothing near a 6 mile climb.

btw, regarding the south loop - https://app.strava.com/activities/19026180

that's a fairly popular route on weekends around this part of dallas. you can head out with any number of groups starting between 7am and 9 (times shift in daylight savings), so if you do head out with a fast group, there's always smaller groups of people in front or behind to keep you on your way back (typically). most of the turns are also marked on the pavement with green arrows, and several roads got re-paved this summer.

the wind is almost always out of the south and usually strong in these open roads, so if you don't like to fight the wind, you'll want to make sure you are with a group

if you're new to the route, you should go with the 8:30 sunday group that leaves from bikemart on garland. it's a no-drop ride.

Thanks Joshuac

These leave from RBM correct? Didn't know that is a no drop and didn't know there were several groups. That is cool and will have to do this loop.
Yeah the winds in Dallas a pain but you have to get use to them.

yup, from RBM on garland. 7:30 is a faster pace and is not a no-drop. 8:30 is a social pace. several other groups usually meet up sometime between those times to head out on their own as well. on saturday, there is a fit2train group that goes out at 7:30 that usually splits into 3 different distance groups. lots of options around here!

Josh
These are some great maps and routes, thanks!
For the Ceder Hill ride, when do you normally take that? Early morning weekends? How is the traffic?

when we do cedar hill, we usually meet at 7am at white rock (saturday or sunday), and we're usually back to the white rock area anytime between 11:30 and 1pm (depending on how fast we're going and how long the stops are). i'd say traffic is pretty minimal for the most part. we start to see more of it on some of the roads when we head back, but it's not bad at all.

there's a group that does a similar route on tuesdays at 7:30, but i've never gone at that time so i can't say what traffic is like during the week.
