Looking for weekend route between Dallas & Austin

Hi All

A friend and I want to complete a shake out tour to prep for a 4 to 5 day tour in Nov. I am trying to find a 30 mile route between camping grounds that is not to technical between Dallas and Austin. The Waco area would be a good spot for example but this is not set in stone.

Not looking for a killer hill ride but something where we can make sure we are ready for a much longer tour. He has completed several muti-day tours before, this will be my first tour even though I have done several mutil-day rides before.

Thank you in advance and great site!

Ray

Three years ago I rode Gainesville-Decatur-Weatherford-Granbury-Glen Rose-Meridian-Valley Mills-Crawford-Belton, then to Austin down the I-35 access road (I was in a hurry to get home!). There's a campground in Glen Rose, but I'm afraid that I stayed in cheap motels in Decatur and Belton. Any 30-mile stretch along there would be good for training, EXCEPT Gainesville-Decatur, which has a lot of fast and impatient traffic towing stuff, and the road loses its shoulder in Denton County, becoming rather scary. There is a lso a good 30 mile route from Austin to Andice on Parmer Lane, but I don't know of campgrounds along it.

By the way, I find that, for my first day of a tour, 45 miles is the limit - after that I get shaky, dehydrated, etc.

Thanks for the tip. I found a 35ish mile route leaving from Lake Waco going to Mother Nurf State Park by way of McGregor Tx. On the map looks like good roads, just need to get an idea of elevations.

I rode the Waco Wild West Century last year. It started in "downtown" Waco and Mother Neff was the halfway point. You can see my ride report here. A PDF of the route is here.

I see now that the route they put us on is a bit circuitous in order to make it a century but it might give you some ideas. As far as elevation is concerned, the hilliest part was coming into the west side of Mother Neff...but it was downhill. This section wasn't far after the unpaved road you'll see in the ride report. Additionally, that section of road is part of an open range, so watch out for the cows!

I hope this helps.
