Help with Route! Cycle from SA Through Houston onto Louisiana

Help with Route! Cycle from SA Through Houston onto Louisiana
I am trying to set up a route to cycle through Houston, coming in from San Antonio, and then onto Louisiana. We'd like to make it as straight through as possible, and not veer off to far in any direction. I am originally from Houston (Deer Park) and still cannot picture a great way to go through Houston. Everywhere seems dangerous! I need help! Two RV's with a film crew will be following, so we need to stick to roads that can be driven on, and we don't want stop signs every 50 yards, but we are open to all suggestions!

Look at SR105 from Brenham to Beaumont. This goes around Houston and the road has a shoulder most of the way.

105 is pretty far north, so you would want to come out of San Antonio north of I-10 and maybe go through Lagrange and Bellville on 159 then up to Hempstead and cut across to 105 through Magnolia and Montgomery. The only other way I could see doing it would be to go down 36 and cut around the south side of town by Brazos Bend State Park, and then down Hwy 6 to Galveston and take the ferry over to Bolivar and take 87 out through Port Arthur, but I really don't know the roads that well east of Houston, so I am not sure what is still rideable out that way post-Ike.

Sorry this auto link not working - The route I first described is a common old route used for bicycles and smaller motorcycles - In 1970 my buddy and I once rode our Honda 125s to Lake Charles and back over a long weekend - We were only 15 and 16 so we stayed off the mains...

I think StephenH is thinking of the Tour de Rouge. This is a multi-day ride from Houston to New Orleans. Look at their website for the route map.

Northern route has a few hills and is much more scenic.
Also, I would recommend starting out on like a Tues am around 3-5am, beating traffic out of town.
Don't want to deal with I10, I35, 1604, SA traffic during rush. This route north of I10 will avoid some of the nastiest, though.
Punch out of SA north of I10 to Seguin, Luling, old hwy 90/service road to LaGrange, Bellville, Hempstead, Magnolia, cut through Houston/I45 between Conroe and the Woodlands, pass south of Cleveland, on in to Beaumont.

A good way to cross the state is called the Southern Tier route. Here is what is tried and true by bicycle tourists who have a coast to coast route already mapped out. Their Southern Tier map has all kinds of services itemized along the way and what can be expected. And yes, they go around big, bad Houston.
