Depends on how long you want to ride and what lifestyle you are looking for. I live NE of White Rock Lake and ride into downtown on occasion. It's about 9.5 miles in and I never have to get on a busy street--Swiss Ave is the busiest I have to deal with. There are tons of really nice neighborhoods just east or north of WRL. Of course, you can't live the Uptown life out here--if you need a place within walking distance where you can see and be seen while trying seem aloof and disinterested, you are not going to be happy out here. But for what you will pay in uptown, you can get much more house/space.

Anything is possible. I live in Euless and bike commute to downtown Dallas every day.
North Irving is nice.
Anything around White Rock Lake.
Oak Cliff is up and coming. They are growing a pretty cool bike scene.
Deep Ellum is cool. You can bike straight through Main Street into downtown.
Uptown is nice, but expensive and full of pretentious d-bags, but... its nice. Plus you get to see exotic cars every day.

Got me a place on gaston by the lake, after looking around awhile. Pretty impressed with the katy trail and the ssnta fe trail and the white rock trail. Beats jacksonville by a long shot, I just wish all roads where there is no trail hsd a bike lane.

Yeah, so long as you can get to White Rock Lake you can get to the head of the Santa Fe trail, which is a 4.5 mile straight shot downtown. There are several feeder trials to WRL (e.g. White Rock Creek trail) but I haven't learned them yet. Katy Trail parallels Central Expy (75), but you'd pretty much have to afford living in the bubble (Park cities) to use it.
Good Luck and keep us informed. I'll be in a similar situation soon.
