Touring in Croatia

We are preparing a cycling trip to Croatia this July, starting from Zagreg to Dubrovnick. We will like to have some informations about the roads, hostels, campings and interesting things to visit.

Check out the Journals on Crazy Guy On a Bike. Katie D. has some nice writing, and really incredible photos. Not sure if this covers the area you're interested in, but maybe send her (or one of the other authors)an e-mail in regards to sights/roads etc.

Land mines do not seem to be a concern any longer.

[EDIT-2nd attemp??] Also, if you don't get that much info from here, perhaps check out the Phred touring e-mail list. I seem to recall a few folks with recent travels through the region. I linked to the main search page-it's an e-mail list serve though, not a BBS. Lots of experienced, knowledgeable folks though.

Quality of roads?

From Dubrovnik to Zadar - excellent
(many bicyclist ride from Dubrovnik to Rijeka, probably
preparing for some tour...)

From Zadar to Rijeka 8/10, but still very good.

From Zadar to Zagreb, 5/10 - there is havy traffic and in some
sections road is
very curvy and there are climbs.
distances (cca)
Dubrovnik - Split = 280 km
Split - Zadar = 200 km
Zadar - Rijeka = 280 km
Zadar - Zagreb = 280 km

There are hostels in Zadar, Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Rijeka
so you want have problems with that.

Croatia was never much a part of the war, and very little if none of the land was mined. Try Bosnia, and I think they are nearly done with de-mining there....

And you're going to miss the Istrian Penninsula? How about this: once you get to Dubrovnik, take the ferry acrooss the islands to Pula and cycle back to Zagreb from there?

I'm from Croatia and Croatia is better choise then Bosnia.
Roads in Croatia are better ! Also, you can ride in Istria,
Dalmatia, very nice road following sea coast :)

i drive down to croatia -dalmatian part -every year form budapest.... i have to say the roads are great...

in fact i am angry that we took the new highway last summe since we missed some cool towns..

zagreb - karlovac - knin - split is cool, pretty big hills, intersting villages, a few bombed out villages, esp. near knin... plitvica falls!, worht a stop!!!! Slunj cool little waterfall in town ad neat mill houses along the river, knin, mighty good burek!, burek is the greatest pastry dish you will eat anywhere in teh balkans and turkey....

if you head farther south, past spilt on the road to dubrovnik, you will see bilokova, a huge mountain, well not that big but you are at sea level making it look really big, a day or two up the back side of that could be cool. i have seen photos and film from there, neat place......

the raod along the coast can be very buys but i have seen many a bike tourers every summer i have been there...

me and my son want to ride down form budapest one summer....
