Sorry for the illogical post.
Maybe I should have asked...what sites do you use to research bicycle routes that people have used.

Yup. Going to just the canal or over the bridge? I'm old school, maps and such. Pick up a rubel bike map of that area, REI should have some. I'm 15 miles north of Boston and it was 70 miles to Miles Standish State forest, Plymouth for 1 day. Camping sites, awesome ponds too.

Check Clair Saltonstall Bikeway
Keep in mind that most of the signage along the route has disappeared, so you must have a map with your. Also, it worth noting that the route was planned many years ago, so many roads that saw very little traffic have much worse traffic now (e.g. chestnut hill area bypass of route 3A)

Going the other way earlier this summer, I took the commuter ferry from Hingham to downtown. Saved a lot of time and hassle and avoided busy roads. Once you are in Hingham, just stay along the water to Plymouth, the ride through Myles Standish, and head south on Federal Road.

Just as an update....
I am 30miles north of Boston near Nashua NH and rode down rt4 through Chelmsford, Billerica, Bedford then on the Minuteman Bikeway to Cambridge. Once in Cambridge jumped on the Charles river bike path through Boston on the exceptional bike lanes then onto the SW Corridor parkway. I will have to admit that riding through the Blue Hills was tough and should be avoided as it sapped the energy right out of me.

I used Google Bicycle Maps and it worked out fine.

Great ride and would do it again!
