Route from Seattle to the tip of Chile suggestions?
Hello!
I am planning a bike ride down the pacific coast, starting from Seattle and hopefully ending at the tip of South America. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions of good routes for parts of the trip (say, Seattle to San Diego) or advice on places to avoid that might be dangerous, and how to cheaply avoid these dangerous places (by boat or bus, flying isn't a very feasible option with my gear). Thanks for your input! Adam |
The GDMBR in the US, not a technical ride, but almost car free.
Peru's Great Divide is a must! Some high passes in the Andes between Chile and Argentina (Sico / San Francisco) Laguna Route in South West Bolivia... Have a look at our website, we are 23 months on the road now. Started in Sao Paulo, pedalled to Ushuaia and took a turn North. At the moment we are in Whitefish, Montana cycling the GDMBR. |
Just follow the ACA Pacific Coast route from Seattle to San Diego. You can also follow the Philtron's trip on crazyguyonabike.com to get some idea of what they encountered on that route, plus in Mexico and South America. They have skipped everything between Cancun, Mexico and Caracas, Venezuela.

Not sure what the ACA recommends for Washington, but from Seattle to Olympia is uninteresting suburbs along the I-5 corridor. When I've cycled long distance (touring, & day trips to Oly) to the south (I live in Seattle), I've taken the ferry over to Bremerton and cycled south from there to Olympia (& the reverse on the way home). If you want a bit of Seattle, you can cycle to the Fauntleroy ferry terminal (riding along Alki beach and the waterfront through Lincoln Park) and take that ferry to Southworth and cycle south from there. From Alki you'll have a great view of downtown Seattle and the skyline, along with the harbor, and a trip to Washington without taking a ferry just seems wrong! |
Just keep the ocean on your right, as you go south.. :innocent: read through CGOAB entries yet?
