Touring Bicycles - Canada
Hi Folks, I know there are lots of threads out there already but I am looking for some specific info.
I am planning a long distance trip through central Asia and am looking for a touring bike in the 1000-1500 dollar range. I have been looking at the Brodie Elan, Fuji Touring, Kona Sutra and the Surly LHT. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge using any of these on long distance trips with heavy gear? Thanks

Go to youtube and type in cycle touring. It seems to me at least 1/2 the folks are on a surly. There's a thread on the Fuji going on right now with some info.

I don't have actual experience yet but in your search for a touring bike, you can also check out the Trek 520, Jamis Aurora and Opus Largo (although the Largo has brifters instead of bar-end shifters on the 520 and Aurora).
EDIT: I also noticed the Soma Saga but the URL says "archive" so I don't know if it's a current model and don't know the availability in Canada. Note that the Miele Andiamo could possibly be used as a touring bike. It's cheaper than other models though.
ANOTHER EDIT: Wow, I just noticed the Novara Randonee. The parts list looks pretty impressive. There's even a WTB saddle. I'm not sure but I think those are being cancelled.

I have the Sutra - did one tour with it so far - bike did beautifully - absolutely no complaints. In the 2 years since my last tour (can't believe it's been that long ) I've been using it as my daily commuter. Pretty bullet proof, thus far.

Urbanite frame which is pretty similar (same factory I heard) is on sale in TO for 185, they will build you a great bike for any purpose. If you are looking at the LHT in 26" for your asian tour (not sure what the Canada portion of your question is), that a pretty interesting and unique option at that price range. Sometimes you can hit a homer on a Thorn for similar bucks.
Most of my recent touring was on an urbanite, or regular MTBS offroad.
Considering your travel plans something like a new world tourist might make sense. Don't buy a bike with a huge additional price tag built into it's use for any time you ship it if that would be an issue.
