Suggestions for removable fenders? (26x2" tires)
 

I currently have SKS Chromoplastics. Good but a PITA when flying because the rear fender must be removed/reinstalled.

What alternatives should I consider?

You may want to consider the SKS Velo models available for any width/diameter wheel. They engage a steel L bracket installed at brake bridge and fork crown. That bracket can be left on during temporary removal They are stiff enough to make dropout struts optional. I don't use the struts on mine. My rear fender passes close enough to the rack to support it from above with with a wire tie. The rear fender does not wrap around the wheel far enough to protect a companion rider behind but that's not an issue for me.

I tried one of the ones that clamps onto the seatpost, it did not stay where I wanted it. But I was not using a rack, if I had a rack I could probably have attached the fender under the rack with a ziptie or something like that. This would not keep road grime off the front derailleur (none on the bike shown in photo) or bottom bracket area, so if that is important to you, then this is not the solution.

I do not recall the brand or model of fender with certainty, but I think it was a Toppeak.

I'm running SKS Velo 65s. VELO 65 MOUNTAIN - SKS-Germany

You install a little, L-shaped metal piece and the fenders just slide on. There are optional stays. I use the stay on the rear, but not the front. Coverage does not match my old, aluminum fenders, but I figure the trade offs are that I can run much wider tires and they should come off easily for packing.

I use SKS Shockblade and Beavertail as well as Mud-X for mountain bikes during the winter. I use the Shockblade as is but I modify the Beavertails (or other similar fenders for more coverage). This is the whole setup

The clip-on fender is routed over the brake bridge and I've cut off the end of a fender to cover the drivetrain. The lower fender is mounted to the seattube with a Minoura water bottle holder. It can also be ziptied to the frame if clearance is a problem. I anchored the end of the fender to the frame with zipties to keep it from hitting the tire.

To keep the end of the fender from flopping around, I tie it to the reflector/light mount on the rack by feeding a zip tie through a hole I drilled in the fender and using just the end of another ziptie to snug it up.

For problems bikes where I can't route the fender over the brake bridge like this one

I make the lower fender longer and then use a short fender on the top that is ziptied to the rack.

It takes less than 5 minutes to install and remove the fenders as long as I leave the lower one in place.

I never removed the mudguards when cartoning up my bike to fly overseas, just slipped the back strut bolts till it contacted the tire.

though if you have to get it all packed in as small a box the brand new bike shipped in that may not be practical ..

Amtrak and KLM have bigger boxes than the new bikes cross the Pacific in, on a Container ship.

How many times have you packed your bike to fly across an Ocean?

interesting set-up. Will look into it. I like the idea of several short sections (even though I am not a fan of tie wrapped components :))
