Please post a photo of your knot. It's hard to believe that you can tie together two rigid cables without the ends fraying or the knot coming undone. Your technique could be a fine solution as a roadside repair.

One of those cable connectors for S&S coupled bikes can also be used for the long cable run. It takes two cables (one front, one rear), but you don't have to worry about tandem cables. (I have a supply of tandem cables at home, but I never seem to take one when I'm traveling!)
